I have a question regarding this engine. Can it be converted to command control with the sound converter and cruise commander? I don't have the engine because I'd want to run it in command mode. I'd also really like to keep the original sound set.

Should be able to do that. There's a long shot that the RS board would be command compatible, maybe you could ask Lionel. Since it's getting it's chuff signals from the locomotive via the IR sensor, it looks like it has serial data capability. You might get away with dropping in the Cruise Commander Lite and having full sound control.
I see it also has a smoke regulator and an 8 ohm smoke element, you may want to change that for command as the R4LC won't handle the current required for that 8 ohm smoke resistor. Personally, I'd have to see if I could cram a fan driven smoke unit in there.
Thanks for the help. I really like the engine (and the conventional moguls) but just sucks that there conv. only.
I have the K-Line A5 TMCC version. I stuck the ERR CC-M into it for cruise, and when I get a chance I'd like to do fan driven smoke. The sticking point will be fitting the Super-Chuffer in, that may be a problem.

Thats sure tiny. It amazes me how they put TMCC in that one and the A5.
If you haven't purchased the engine yet you should check out the K-line version. Lionel used the shell for their engine. With TMCC they can be found for under 200 bucks. Whistle and chuff are surprisingly loud for a RS4 engine and they can be upgraded to ERR Cruise as well.

I like the sound set on the conventional version the best. That's why I want to convert it.

This is a very old Digital Dynamics upgrade in a Weaver A5. There was some tender modifications to do this with sound. Newer/maybe smaller ERR components, a bit more friendly.
Lower tender coal doors were moved forward. Right in picture.
@SantaFeFan Can this conversion be done?

I put a CC-Lite in a Weaver A5, and I had room for the sound as well with no tender mods.
