I'm thinking of upgrading from my postwar ZW when I build the new layout after we move.  I was thinking of going with 2 135W bricks ( I have them laying around) & getting a TIU so I can run stuff of the vari channels.    My question is about the sine wave - I'm pretty sure the 135W bricks are a pure sine wave. once I hook them up to the TIU does that get chopped?  I have 2 older weaver engines with the QSI sound that I believe give issues with a chopped sine wave ( or at least they did when I used a CW80 to test them)

Other option would be to just get a Z4K - which I kind of like as well b/c I know the kids love to be able to use the transformer handles instead of the remote.

I can only tell you my own experience.   On my old layout which I just tore down to rebuild I had two 135 watt bricks powering a modern ZW through a TIU and had no issues with my MTH engines as well as a conventional Lionel PRR Flyer and at one time the Lionel Missile Launch engine.

You can also wire your layout to still use the handles of the ZW if you would like.

why was the post moved - I didn't mention running in command mode at all.

Just a thought,,,,,,you DID state "TIU" in your title.

this is strictly conventional for now. If anything, I would be using the DCS features from the TIU, which is why O posted in teh genral forum b/c it deals with  DCS, conventional & the power bricks from Lionel

Maybe this should be on the Electrical Forum?

To answer the question, any transformer connected to the TIU variable channels and controlled in variable mode will have a chopped waveform, that's how the variable channels control the voltage.

So I can expect to have issues with the QSI sound Weaver engines then, correct? or is it just the CW80 being a CW80?
