MTH chose to issue this repro set in a reasonable facsimile of the original "battleship grey" with two matching "ammunition cars", and without the lettering shown in the catalog, again as per the original set. Presumably, the traditional motor also does NOT have a reversing unit.

 

For an accurate historical perspective on the original loco, I would highly recommend Dr. Case Kowal's article on pages 32-33 in the Carstens publication, "Toy Trains of Yesteryear", (1987). This article originally appeared in Toy Trains magazine.

 

My first encounter with the original was in the Lionel Showroom museum about 1953. I am certain I left some nose and fingerprints on that glass display case!

I'm not surprised, I always thought this listing was strange.  Why would they have listed the 203 as separate sale at $59 when it is in the set for $399? It was never confirmed as a dummy unit either.  Now with the pre production photos, the remaining add on makes sense as troop cars.  Better still,  I just gained $50 for York.
