This car was issued with the Boston & Albany direct to consumers set, (1986?), and created an uproar with Lionel dealers. My question is: did this Reefer, included in a Lionel orange window box, get released with no identification on either end flap?

That's correct. The orange box has no label on either end.
Thanks, Stu. Are you aware of any other examples of this?

Yes, the 4-pack of freight cars this was a part of, all 4 cars had blank ends on the boxes. Also, the 2 pack of cabooses that were part of this direct to consumer program also had blank ends on the boxes.
Wow - was not aware of this. Unusual, huh? I’m sure the direct to consumer sale had something to do with this, but I don’t see any reasonable explanation for it. Thanks, again.

I agree that the 4-pack were not labelled on any of the four individual boxes.
I agree that the 2-pack of hoppers do have labels on the two individual boxes.
I've never seen the 2 cabooses with labels on the boxes. Only ever seen unlabeled boxes and I've seen dozens of them. Please share a photo of either of the cabooses with a labeled box.
