Update, I ran the engine for a while and found out that the sound amplifier board was not what was getting warm, it was the clip on the sound card itself.

I'm surprised that chip can get hot enough to feel it through the diecast shell, that doesn't seem possible and still have the sound working.  That chip may feel warm, but to heat that big chunk of metal, it would have to be VERY HOT!

The ambient temperature was also rather high in my room that day, around 80 F.  I also use the volume pot to adjust the volume to around 50% - 75% volume at home. While I had the shell off, I also checked the audio power board and the DCDS-J heat sinks. The inductor was a bit warm, and so were some the through hole capacitors, for the audio power board. The DCDS-J was barely warm.

In any case, I'll be keeping an eye on it. Thankfully the sound board is still available for purchase, might purchase a spare one once Lionel opens up again. I'd rather it be the sound board that goes, rather than the DCDS-J. Since it doesn't look fun to replace.

Depending on where the DCDS is located, they can be easy or a Royal PITA to replace.
