Excited to report the first power for the A&A short line is complete and ready for delivery!   I’ll do my best to help get all of the STL files for this build into the repository  8B9494F7-F128-406B-ADE9-018BD7F935C38A434A09-C93D-4A48-ABA6-576262EFEB7BCEF30ED9-E120-48DA-84D6-DF28C7BC1A5D0495364E-4293-4661-83AD-75998E8BAB252A22FF87-D103-41FE-AF71-5C9B6035912957F1DFFF-D449-44DF-9091-3F7C01EFE2EFA0133F64-CEB1-45E1-91CE-AE17E068806B

Looking back over the past 3.5 months I tried to recall all the modifications made to this late 90's Lionel F3 in order to get to where it is right now.

Weathering aside, there were a ton of custom designed parts using Fusion360 and printing on the Anycubic Mono X.

Additionally, there were numerous parts purchased from P&D Hobbies and Precision Scale that really helped make this project pop.

Here's everything that went into this build!

Custom Designed/3D Printed Parts:

1. Pilot fixed Kadee/leading edge drop adapter
2. Pilot opening reduction spacer
3. Front headlight
4. Custom number board
5. Number board frame
6. Front cab side ladder
7. Front cab door kickplate
8. Rear cab side ladder
9. Rear Kadee/diaphragm adapter
10. Diaphragm spacer place
11. Fuel tank drop
12. Magnetic MU cable coupler
13. Winterization hatch
14. Steam stack
15. Steam generator
16. Steam generator vent
17. Portholes
18. Side platform
19. Horn mount
20. Vent screen frames                            21.  Marker lights
22. Flag mounts (flags coming soon!)

Purchased from P&D or PSC

1. MU cables/cable outlet box
2. Air hose
3. Cut levers
4. Single chime horn
5. Lift rings
6. Windshield wipers

Purchased from Lionel

1. Diaphragms

Custom made

1. A&A Decals (printed by Highball Graphics)
2. 0.018" and 0.015" brass grab irons

Other Parts:

1. Kadee 745 couplers
2. 24x24 mesh for vent screens

Appreciate all who were following along with this project with comments, encouragement, and advice 🙂

Time to go haul some coal and coke...and build a layout so the A&A can junction with B&O trackage!

Next up on the F3 project for 2022: 2-rail truck conversion, installation of DCC motor controller, and installation of LokSound decoder to let that 567 diesel really grumble!

Fantastic work !!!!

But, I hope you can find a more scale looking screen for the side screens sometime.

I wish I had a great suggestion, but I don't. Maybe if the screens were the same color as the loco and weathered, or perhaps blackened and weathered.

Thanks!

The screen was the first mod I did of the whole project…and had no idea it would snowball into what it did.   I measured what was molded from lionel and then cut it out and bought equivalent sized screen.

As I went through the project and learned more about F3 prototypes, I realized that Lionel’s shell as a whole is neither an F3 nor an F7…and some parts/design simply don’t exist on any phase (or are grossly out of scale)    It’s definitely not a great scale model at baseline (vs atlas or p&d kits) but I just tried to see what I could turn it into!

Some things, like the vent / screens, and the transition between the shell and the pilot i had realize I just had to let be.

i believe all-nations sells a full length scale vent screen on eBay…which might be what I use for a future model?

for this one though, i painted the mesh silver, dull coated it, and gave it a light brush with black powder.   Lest I go crazy… sometimes good enough needed to be good enough
