Jeff T you do not need it BUT a Lionel Track Power Controller would let you access the conventional MTH commands with one button push - auto couplers Passenger or freight sounds + allow you to run conventional engines fron your Cab 1. The Ford Model Railroad club uses these on our module and we enjoys the ability to go out in the crowd to talk to, and let other people run the trains.
You can also consider the MTH DCS Remote Commander, it's a simple one locomotive controller that accesses most of the enhanced features of the PS/2 locomotives and costs #30-40 street price. I have one for the two PS/2 locomotives I have, one restriction is you can't run multiple PS/2 locomotives at the same time with this unit. It's a cheap way to get in the DCS door. Smile
