I'm in the process of planning for my future layout.  I currently have the CW-80 as my power source, but with more than one train or long passenger trains, they are proving to be underpowered.  I started using them before I learned that they didn't work with PS-2 locomotives.  But now that I need more power and some newer MTH locomotives are really tempting (I'm looking at you Erie Triplex.) I'm trying to decide which transformers I should start saving for.  I really like the look and feel of the CW-80, and all the kids I've had run my trains, from 1 year old on up, handle them very well, so the GW-180 seems like the logical next step.  But I don't want to get it if it'll continue to limit my locomotive selection.

So to cut to the short of it, does PS-2 or PS-3 locomotives have any issues with the Lionel GW-180 transformers?  I run conventional and would like to run at least 2 trains trains at a time, both possibly passenger trains.

Sinclair,

All those Lionel transformers have chopped Sine Wave form and work great with Lionel engines. But you may run into issues with some other brands.

I agree with John on the Z-4000 as an excellent choice and it has a fan to keep it cool inside and excellent circuit breakers.

A post-war ZW puts out Pure Sine Wave form and may meet your needs for now, but its only a little over half of a Z-4000.

If you go this route install fuses or breakers on the outputs of the post-war ZW as the original circuit breakers are inadequate. I would also limit the fuses adding up to 10 to 12 amps total to keep from overheating the windings in the old ZWs.
