Hello; I am looking for information on a Lionel Junior set of trains for my brother- in- law.

He does not want to sell them but would like to pas them down to his grandson.  They were given to him when he was a youngster by an uncle.  He believes they were the uncle's set when he was a kid.  The set numbers on the cars are 1700 power car--1701 coach---1702 on the obs. they are orange in color.

I've seen the set and they are in beautiful condition. with the original cartons   Can you let us know when the set was cataloged  and for how many years was this color variation available.

Any info you might provide he'd like to pass on to his grandson when he gives him the set. He can pass on his memories  along with info about the set.

Thank you for any help you might offer

From Greenberg’s Pocket Price Guide (and Doyle’s Prewar Lionel Trains) the set was cataloged from 1935 to 1937.  Beside the orange/gray ones that your in-law has, they were also made in aluminum/red and chrome/red.

The 1071E set included two 1701 coaches, transformer and track and retailed at $9.75.  The 1072E set with two switches and a bit more track went for $14.50.
