I picked up this engine last week and right when I brought it home it had issues. I am trying to locate a wiring diagram so I can see where the antenna goes as I don't see one. The issues appear to be TMCC related erratic start/stop, taking off as if it was in conventional mode etc. When I remove the shell the issues go away leading me to think it is an reception issue. I also reseated all the boards as they were loose which did stop the flickering of the lights and erratic smoke.

The handrail on the locomotive are the antenna. Just find the connection to them. If it has TMCC operation at all with the shell on, check the insulators on the handrails to see if one is missing/out of place.

Thanks for the info! Figured out what the issue was. The antenna wires under the shell were rubbing on the motor pully when it was spinning causing a short.
and making the train run erratically. I shrink wrapped the wires, glued them to the shell so they wouldn't hang and tinned the end of the wires. When I first looked under the shell very quickly I thought the wires were for lights.
