Hi -

I have an 8030 Illinois Central GP-9 diesel that I need to repair the motor truck.  I need to remove the side truck (wheel covers) so I can replace a drive gear and replace the rubber tires on the drive wheels.

The side covers appear to be "stamped" in place.  I suppose I could drill or use a Dremel to grind out where they are attached, but if I do that, how do I reattach them?

Any and all help/suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

-Brad

Thanks, Rob, but I am not concerned about the motor.  Yes, I need to replace the 8010-116 gear, but my manual dexterity is not what it once was and was hoping to remove the wheel covers so I could get better access.  The distance between the wheels and the cover is less than a 1mm, so I don't see how I can replace the traction rubber.

You can grind down the crimps that hold the truck side frames on and then epoxy them back on when you are done. They are often loose anyway and I have just pried them off with a screwdriver. Getting the wheel off will require a wheel puller though.
