Ugh.  Just when I was hoping there'd be nothing else I'd be tempted to buy for awhile....  They re-release the PE #1225 Berk, as well as a Wheeling & Lake Erie.  Will also probably want to snag another PE Gold coach & the PE Combi car, as well as the PE tank car.  At least I'm not a Pennsy collecter.... Decisions, decisions....

Some comments from Scrapiron. I hope the "police" will give this some time before I get my usual label.

1) There was a lot of anticipation here for "highly valued" items and the result is surely mixed. The Milwaukee Road #261 reappearing is nice, but NO whistle steam was added along with the $800 that was. I may buy one if the street price comes in at $1400 but doesn't the lack of whistle steam for $1799 bother you? It sure bothers me. I know, I know, they need the smoke generator for the steam chest. For $800 more they could have figured this out.

2) The Santa Fe E6 reappears in Legacy and with four motors. No "chroming" side panels? Did the E6 not have aluminized side panels? I may buy this one, too, but Atlas O KNOCKED it out of the park with their F7's.

3) Husky stacks are a good value. The street will have about $105 for a die cast car WITH two containers.

4) Berkshires and AC6000's . . . . MEH

5) WHERE is the ******* Niagara?

6) WHERE is the Vision Line?

7) Something all new? It's there? Where ?

Santa Fe F's won't be an exact match. We're adding the "stainless" side panels to these so there will definitely be a different shine.

Polar Berk will have the same sound set as the last version with all the movie dialog. Observation cars will have the same round railing as before.

Thanks! - Ryan

How about the S-3 Will it have the sound set from the last run? @Conrail6358

Slight bummer on the F3.

Great news on the Polar Express.

Thanks for the response!

No Cabooses?  Unless I missed it, no cabooses?   I finally get a Rutland engine with the soon to be delivered Mogul engine, and with all these milk cars no Rutland Caboose.  Come on Lionel think outside the box with this one.

With a Grand Trunk Mogul on order, was hoping for a GT caboose.

MTH your up next.

Catalog is o-k, but big disappointment with no Niagara or N &W #1218. Basically everything in there has been re-made after the Niagara & N &W #1218. Was hoping for some surprise accessories like X gate with sound or stop station with announcements. Not sure if I will order anything. Maybe ACL E-6's.

GM&O wood chip hopper; GM&O TOFC trailers - definite buys for me.

Georgia Marble and Union Carbide (former employer)  hoppers are probables.

Had the ACL E6's been the black w/yellow stripes - probably.

Had the L&N E6's been the gray w/yellow - probably (saw those as a kid/teen).

No! Wait! Not 2 E6 sets....so I won't have to choose; wrong paint schemes for both roads. No order.

Once again, a fake L&N M-1 Berkshire - had it been a proper model, I would have reserved one. But, nope. MTH has faked this loco twice using the same NKP stand-in (not even close) in both Premier and RK. Now, another one from Lionel. Sheesh.

Wow, Lionel brought back the Legacy F3 AA and two B's, powered and non powered, but, they have the bass feature on the dummy B, and the Legacy powered B with railsounds....This is a WIN WIN for me. Thank you Lionel.....Also, AC6000's in CSX another WIN WIN and I will be a player for those, possibly both Diversity Diesels....This is a really nice catalog with many goodies and lots of eye candy....Thank You Lionel.

First the light Mikes again now Berkshires  AGAINBerkshires and Mikes......Berkshires and Mikes.......Berkshires and Mikes....... over and over and over... sheesh Lionel what about something different??

That Niagara  rumor/baloney thats been floating prior to the last 3 catalogs would have been exciting. The nicely detailed J3a from 15 years ago with a swinging bell would have been interesting too.

Theres other locos in other roadnames that haven't been as rehashed either, maybe Lionel lost/misplaced half of the tooling from the early/mid 2000's?????

Now for those happy with the offerings, enjoy! I just had to get that off my chest.

Think I have the same problem.  (Saw the above, and cover looks gold instead of black, etc)

Do you have any idea what you reset to get it to look correct?

Thanks in advance if you do know!  Unfortunately the way you worded your response, I suspect you maybe are saying you "reset defaults" on some master button/checkbox somewhere.

How novel!.

Not true. Looks like they are indeed going to have the shiny stainless side panels on them, according to Ryan Kunkle. Even if they didn't, I'd get them before the Atlas versions with their flat red paint.

So looks like it will cost 2500.00 for the PE complete set? And 2700.00 with gold coach?

I never got the first run, but that's out of the budget for me at that price.

Otherwise I have pretty much everything already.  Was hoping for something new and exciting never done before.

Not a fan of the black pages with the picture cutouts with no closeup detail.  Bring back larger actual photographs!

Guess I'll add the CN white tank train cars for my existing set and that will be it.

Considering those, but I need to review the old ones.  Something about the deco scheme looked different to me (not sure if it is just my memory or something real).  The yellow seemed more pronounced than the original series.

If they match (and it can be confirmed all road numbers are different than previous issues) I may go for those, but will probably not bother if they aren't a match to the originals.

Hoping for a separate flyer to cover the Disney related stuff that was alluded to in a previous Notch-6 interview, since there wasn't anything in there.  Though I suppose that comment could have been meant for 2018 Vol 1, since next year is the Mouse's 80th Birthday.   (putting on my asbestos underwear now)

Ok let's be honest the s3 was underpriced when it came out.  Now a certain vender has them at 1350 (preorder)and while I don't think that's a great price it's not bad and that's cheaper then people are selling them and they have more options (Bluetooth).1350 for a s3 isn't bad and to all the people saying mth well there 1100. I think a Bluetooth legacy steamer with blowdown is worth the extra ..

I can give the Light Mikados a pass, because I'll be getting the excursion version 587, and I like that they did the Cuyahoga Valley Line's Mikado.

But with only 3 years since the last Berks were made, and most in schemes MTH has already done, too? Thanks, but I'll pass.

They apparently still have the old scale Camelback, 2-6-6-2 Mallet, EM-1, and E-6 Atlantic tooling from the early 2000's, so I hope that's not the case.

The only problem I see is the powered b doesn't have smoke listed as a feature. Say it ain't so!

And I can't wait to hear the Legacy Railsounds Lionel uses in these F3's.  The "sick-cow" horn on the Atlas-O F3 is a total non-starter for me -- even with a slightly improved sound set.  No way I'm gonna spend big bucks on an ABBBA configuration only to cringe every time the horn sounds.

Legacy Railsounds should take care of that -- even if we need to go off prototype a bit.  The days of the sick-cow horn should be history by now.  Time to retire that once and for all.

No it wasn't.  ALL of this stuff should have been priced at the S3's original price-point.  Do you honestly think the Chinese factory is getting all the extra $$$$ for this new S3???

2011: $995 MSRP   vs.  2017: $1700 MSRP

Howard's gonna have to look somewhere else to earn his year-end bonus.

The "black" sure makes it hard to view the "print" on the product - please stop using that format.

I disagree with you completely in 2012 they where charging 1100 for the j and the daylight and they didn't have smoking whistle and that was street price . Those are 4-8-4 and about the same size and everything. The s-3 was a deal at 900 bucks. Now if your saying that's all they should be that's fine but compared to all the other engines at the time they were cheaper.

Sean, that gold coach is intended to go with the gold Polar Express Berk from a few years ago, and Lionel P/E enthusiasts should be thanking their lucky stars that Lionel decided to re-issue the gold coach.  It was reportedly under-produced TREMENDOUSLY on its initial production run.  And for the longest time, dealers were left with tons of gold observation cars to sell with no coaches.

Lionel only produced one regular gold coach plus the matching observation car.  Folks SHOULD have ordered MULTIPLE gold coaches to make a nice gold Polar Express train.  But many only ordered one of each -- thinking Lionel would eventually offer different gold P/E cars (i.e., baggage, combo, diner, etc...).  But Lionel only offered that one gold coach initially, and it looks like that's all they're doing in this latest catalog as well.  So for folks who missed out initially, NOW is the time to learn from their mistake and order MULTIPLE gold coaches to make a longer train.

I did a quick pricing of the Polar Express and cars based on the dealers "pre-order pricing" and I'm looking at about $2100.  One dealer had his "real price" listed for a brief time yesterday and that price dropped another $150 for the engine.  I suspect when all said and done this set will cost you about $1900 and change if you use a good dealer.

I'll be putting my name in for a full Polar Express at my LHS, Imperial Train Company, on Saturday.  This is a set I always wanted.  As far as pricing, it is what it is.  You have to decide whether it's worth it to you.  The PE definitely is for me.

My .02:

The addition of Bluetooth to Legacy locomotives is a great development that will start to bridge the operating system divide.

I have catalogs from the 1980s and 1990s downstairs.  Every once in a while I take a look at them. This catalog blows them away.  We have it good today, still, despite higher prices.

I see more Legacy locomotives and rolling stock that can handle tighter radius turns.  This is also a good development for those us that do not have monster layouts.

I am not going to get into the pricing food fight.  Suffice to say that Lionel must have rational data supporting its pricing model and it is the consumer's call on what to pay.  The rest will sort itself out.

Maybe this will encourage Lionel to add some additional cars to the Gold Set.  I know of a few shops stuck with the observation cars.
