Will a ps2 upgrade kit run a Lionel (610-8057-200) fan driven smoke unit?? Looks like a gunrunnerjohn or GGG chime in!!

Be careful that you check the resistance of the elements first.
I would not hook it up, myself. I would swap out with MTH ones if you're unsure.
They'll be right here......
Yes, but you need to cut the traces to the heat element that has continuity to chassis ground. You want the heat element isolated. I would also change it from a 27 ohm to 16 ohm element. Probably best to remove the capacitor and diode. You don't want the PS-2 wires powering any other devices or have a path to chassis ground.
For the fan motor you don't plug it into the smoke unit instead it will be directly wired to the PS-2 harness. G
The PS-2 smoke uses 2 16 ohms in parallel (8 ohms effective), so the single 16 should not smoke as much. G
Thanks Joe & George. I think I will just try & find an MTH unit.
I have some, what engine are you converting? G

It is a Lionel, that I am upgrading from conventional, & I think I am going to go with TMCC/Railsounds. Would be a little easier for my way of thinking. Tom
You can buy a new MTH PS2 smoke unit, they're not that expensive. It'll give you impressive smoke from the PS/2 upgrade kit.

John, Having a hard time finding the MTH fan driven smoke units. Do you have a site??
Tom,

Yes, the MTH parts web site.
Tom, MTH smoke units run $50 MSRP plus shipping from MTH. I have some standard stock numbers I can give you depending on the application. Is this diesel or steam, what type of smoke stack, and room in the engine. Pictures would help.
MTH doesn't have a picture website for parts like Lionel does. The mod to the Lionel isn't really that hard. Fitting a MTH may take more work like making a bracket and smoke stack fitting.
I have some smoke units in stock. With the engine type (model number), I can look at lionels website to see the type of smoke unit they use as a start point.
As a note, MTH units won't work if you keep TMCC. You can send power to the element, but won't have the 5VDC to drive the smoke fan. You would have to use a PS-1 unit, but won't have the same level of control and chuff as MTH. G

That is not helpful with out a part number:-) G

Thanks G, I think I will go with TMCC/Railsounds like I stated previously. Thank you all for your input. Tom
Thank you all for your input on this issue. This site is great, with a lot of very nice and knowledgable people. Tom
Here's a $30 on on the Lionel parts site that is listed as available.
6108057200 | FAN DRIVEN SMOKE UNIT / RECT / DIESEL / 27 OHM | $30.00 |
Contact Boxcar Bill here, and he'll probably have a decent price on this or a similar unit.

John, I have the smoke unit and have contacted Bill. He has all the parts except the rail sounds. They are out, even at ERR. New ones may be in around the 15th or so. Bill also informed me the new sound boards are much better quality, and cheaper, so I will wait on them. Thank you, John. Tom
I've been hearing that ERR is going to have newer sound boards, so I'm looking forward to that as well.
