At least in NYC, from memory, I thought they went brankrupt or were teetering about maybe 15 years ago and then like a Phoenix row from the ashes?  

Such a shame.  Macy's is/was the flagship department  store and had awesome customer care and products. I think the one in Herald Square is still awesome even if the toy stock isn't as great as it once was.  One thing to be said about traditional retail is that you get to see the item and touch it in person.  A great benefit in many cases...

As much as I am not a fan of doing much shopping on line (like to see what I'm getting - don't care if shipping stuff back that I don't like once in hand is "free", it's still a major PITA), I was about to comment that I hope if they did offer one you could order it on-line again.

I loved these cars (well, all but the brown one, I passed on that version), but I definitely didn't love running around to every store in my area to see if/when they got any (and where each store may have decided to put them, which was relatively inconsistent around here).
