Back in 2005 (can’t believe it’s been that long!!!), I went on a Windstar Mediterranean cruise. As with most cruises, they had little side trips (for some pretty stiff prices) to various sites near the cruise stops. When we landed in Livorno Italy, there offered two bus trips - one to Florence, and one to Pisa. Fortunately, two friends spoke Italian and were able to get info on taking local train service to the destinations, saving us a ton of money. I just came across some of the pictures I took on those trips.
This is the train we took from Livorno to Florence:
And here is another local train that passed through the station while we were waiting:
Finally, here are some pics of trains at the station in Florence:
In addition to saving a lot of money by taking the trains, we also saved ourselves a long walk... the folks who took the bus trips ended up about two miles out from the center of the city - the bus was too big to negotiate the old narrow streets. The train station, on the other hand, dropped us a few blocks from all the museums/attractions we wanted to see!!!
