We made it through "the End of the World" to reach the end of the year.  This is a small sampling of the voluminous images captured by me through 2012.  I hope some of the other contributors can share a year of photos as well.

Ringing in the new year last December 31 is Baldwin Locomotive Works 0-6-0 no. 26 undergoing a massive rebuild at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton.  The bell was later taken down so other work could proceed.

On January 6, I was able to catch this early evening arrival of Amtrak at the Williamsburg, VA station.

February 18 was the return of steam operations at the Strasburg Rail Road in Strasburg, PA. Norfolk & Western 4-8-0 no. 475 began the long year of runs to Paradise and return.

Exactly a month later, I explored the rail freight remnants of New York City. Part of it was a hike on the northern portion of the New York Central's high-line.  In the foreground is the publicly accessible portion.  The other branch leads to the Post Office building.

More shots are coming, but my coffee cup needs a refill first.  Enjoy, and please feel free to contribute.

April found me again in Virginia, this time at the VA Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.  N&W's steam stars of the 1980s and early 90s no 611 and 1218 are posed under cover along with N&W 2-8-0 no 6.

May 5 was a photo freight excursion run by the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley railroad historical society.  The trip was on the coal lines of the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern. 3 former LV switchers lead 10 hoppers and caboose, along with some passenger cars.

Later in May, as Santa Fe 4-8-4 made the run from Los Angeles to Williams, AZ to celebrate the centennial of Arizona, I was able to ride the steam double header to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.  Leading the way was Grand Canyon 2-8-2 no. 4960.

June 9 saw Steamtown and the Lackawanna Historical Society commemorate 150 years since the Civil War with a Civil War train.  While the train is definitely 20th Century material, President Lincoln and the Union reenactors brought the gathered crowds to the 19th Century.  Stops were made in Carbondale and Jessup, PA.

Part 3 of the year is coming right up.

July 19 saw the arrival of Erie Lackawanna diners in Scranton.  The Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society has been working for at least 10 years to have one or more in service with authentic EL food service.  There are 3 cars altogether.  DL&W 470 was built in 1949 for the Phoebe Snow, whereas Erie 741 was built in 1923 for the Erie Limited.

Illinois Central 2-8-0 at Steamtown gained a solar panel in August so her headlight could shine in the turntable display area.  Beyond the gate is Reading FP& no 903, on loan from the Philadelphia chapter, NRHS.

September brought Steamtown's Railfest. One of the visiting guest locomotives was Norfolk Southern F9 no 4271 coming off display at the turntable In the background is Reading & Northern no. 802 (which served as power for the May excursion).

Also part of RailFest was a pair of steam excursions to Moscow, PA on the former DL&W mainline. Canadian National 2-8-2 no 3254 performs this runby.

The end of the year is near!  Stay tuned.

An October surprise!  Black River & Western returned 2-8-0 no. 60 to steam service after a long rebuild.  May she have many more years of running through the New Jersey countryside.

During Scranton's Santa parade, Steamtown's Scranton Limited train blasts over South Washington Ave. This was November 17.

Late in the day on November 26, I caught this unusual scene of Central of New Jersey big hook no 5.

And on December 3, DL&W F3s 663 and 664 are enveloped by fog.  All in all, it was a very good year.  I hope it was for you as well.

Please post some of your memories of 2012 here.  Have a Happy New Year!
