I took advantage of the recent sale of Lionel over-stocked items and purchased the NYC 20th Century Limited Heavyweight passenger four car set for $299. The set has been in recent catalogs, most recently the 2014 Signature Edition.
The box arrived today, it was in really good shape, but instead of setting it aside and opening it up later, or in a few instances, never, I decided to open them up and get them on the layout ASAP. Unfortunately, while the items were still mint in the box, with no signs of being opened, the first two cars had problems with the trucks. Initially, I thought that just the caps that lock in the wheel sets had come off, but it the washer-ring behind the side frame has broken as well as another piece was broke on another truck. Three of the four trucks on the two cars had problems. Interesting, all of the problems were on the side facing down in the Styrofoam container.
The good news is that Charles Ro will be sending UPS to pick up the box in a few days, so hopefully, I will have a set that is good to go in the near future.
Lastly, I think going forward I will always open the box as soon as I get it. So to quote Ronald Reagan “Trust but verify”.
This shows the full car, i like it alot!
This is a close up of the truck. You can see the middle wheel cap is off, and the bar next to it on the right is broken.
This is a truck on the other car that I opened, two of the wheel caps are off and one of them has a broken ring on the other side.
