Recieved my PA's today and they sure look nice. Already saw photos in one of the other posts. A question for anyone who also has them. In the instructions it states that a module is included but none was found. I read that the Y3's do not come with a module and it sounds like Legacy version 1.5 somehow recognizes/contains the data for that engine. Guessing that maybe the PA's are similar? Since I'm only on 1.3 I might be forced to upgrade to get that feature. I won't be able to check operation for several days as my layout is currently in a messy state of construction with mountain construction, rock coloring and earth undercoating.

Hello, I received my PA's a week ago and they are stunning. The fan driven smoke is impressive but loses some of it's appeal after 20 minutes or so in a closed room. I need an exhaust fan!

An O gauge friend seems to think maybe the innards of the PA's is really Legacy and not just TMCC as advertised. The instruction book refers heavily to Legacy operation but maybe that's SOP since Lionel doesn't market the TMCC system any longer. No Legacy module included in my set.

However the incredibly slow pace you can achieve suggests maybe it is a Legacy system.

Anyone have any facts as to the boards inside the Loco?

One other thought...I wish the electrocoupler on the rear of the power unit was instead installed on the nose of the dummy unit. That way the locos could remained paired up when releasing the freight/passenger cars since they were usually connected rear to rear.

The PA's are Legacy electronics.

We are not supplying Orange Modules as the Cab-2 has the built in functionality for the "S" product line.  On the PA, you can use V1.3 of the Legacy O/S, simply select "DSL" and you are good to go.

If you upgrade to V1.5x of the Legacy O/S then you should select "FPD" for "Flyer / Pullmor Diesel"

We ran the new Lionel AF MKT Texas Special PA-PA last night on my Legacy layout.  When programmed as FPD (Flyer Pulmor Diesel) it operated with a full set of Legacy features and commands including quillable 3-tone horn, 3 levels of smoke volume control, standard speeds including 1-step roll speed, etc.  The dummy headlight is on/off depending on how you set a switch underneath it, but not directionally controlled.  They ran well.  The power unit has two motors each with side-frame gearing.  Nice 21st century renderings of Gilbert PA's for sure.  I say it that way, because I would expect true 21st century PA's to have a crew, marker lights that illuminate, and generally have a bit more scale realism to them as with the U33C's.  BTW - did the real Texas Special ever get pulled by PA's?

To the best of my knowledge the Katy ran PA units as the power for the Texas Special soon after the original EMD E7's and later E8's. The Katy ,being ever frugal, soon lost an appetite for the expensive "Texas Special" lettering.

Beginning in 1949 the Katy purchased several Pa-1 units from Alco. They ran concurrently with the E units when needed pulling at times consists of repainted heavyweight cars made to look like the newer streamlined Texas Special cars.

The fact that Lionel lettered the new PA's is great as that's the way the Katy might have had them lettered had their pockets been a little deeper.

Hello, I received my Texas Special Passenger car set 6-49949 today from Charles Ro.

They are very well done and the color matches the PA AA's exactly.

One car had to have one of the wheelsets regauged...no big deal.

The two add on cars, Vista Dome 6-49956, and baggage car 6-49957 are due for delivery to me on Saturday 2/16/13.

(The 1956 Catalog car 6-48826 will also arrive this Saturday.)

This will complete the Texas Special PA AA set. However, Lionel may issue additional cars in the future...we'll just have to wait and see.

Does anyone know when the Lionel 2013 Volume 1 catalog will be available?

I've heard there will be a lot of American Flyer offered.

Mark
