I asked this question the other day in the topic of "Was steam dead by 1956?" which was an error in judgement on my part as it was off-topic, but the subject of "Was steam dead by 1956?" made me wonder what existing engines, either operational or on static display, are represented by our models? After all, it's nice to be able to run a model of the NKP #725 knowing the prototype is really out there. I suspect this line of reasoning likely influenced many to purchase the UP Big Boy #4014 knowing the 1:1 version would soon be plying the high iron. For those who tend to the more "scale" aspects of modeling what better reason than to run the Pere Marquette #1225, in excursion or freight photo run-bys, along with your ES44's or SD70's.

As such I would appreciate your input on the real prototypes, preserved in static display or operational,  which are modeled. Any manufacturer is good.   For example, these are some that come to mind:

- Lionel NKP Berkshire 765       operational

- Lionel PM Berkshire 1225       operational

- Lionel UP Big Boy 4014          operational (soon!!)

- Lionel UP Big Boy 4012          static display

- Lionel N&W #1218                 operational

- Lionel N&W #611                   operational

any help with this would be appreciated.....I'm listing some Lionel simply because I'm not familiar with all of the MTH product line and specialty manufacturers like Kohs are out of my league but anyone who makes a model of an existing prototype is valid. Any help is appreciated..thanks!!

Back in the early days MTH offered all of the surviving Santa Fe 2900 class Northerns (5 or 6, I don't recall at the moment).

A couple more off the top of my very flat head:

3rd Rail CB&Q 4-8-4 5629 Colo. Railroad museum

3rd Rail CB&Q 4-6-4 3007 IRM

3rd Rail CB&Q 2-8-2 4963 IRM, 4960(GCRy,although 4960 is extensively modified today.)

Rusty

Also just off the top of my head:

I know for a fact that Weaver produced a model of the Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 #261.

Lionel did a model for the Pennsy Atlantic #460 that carried the films of Charles Lindbergh.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that both Lionel and MTH produced models of the only remaining NYC Mohawk #3001.

Again not 100% sure but I believe that both Lionel and MTH produced models of the Reading Class T1 4-8-4. There are four of these engines that still exist today numbers 2100, 2101, 2102, 2124. I'm not sure if all were produced in O gauge but I think at least two of them were.

MTH, I believe more than once, produced C&O Greenbriar #614.

Lionel, MTH, and Sunset 3rd Rail all have produced the Pennsy K4 #1361.

Both Lionel and MTH produced the UP CHallenger #3985 and UP 4-8-4 #844.

You have started what will be a very long list!

Here are a couple from the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

The MTH guys have spent plenty of quality time at the Pennsylvania State Railroad Museum too.

For more info on models of surviving ATSF and CP Hudsons, CN Mountains and AMC Berks see the O Scale Locomotive Guide.

Fortunately, the 3001 is NOT an only child, she has a Sister Mohawk, #2399 in St. Louis, these pics were taken of her during Cosmetic restoration in 2008. I have not been back, so I don't know what the current status is, but Hopefully finished.

Here are some of the new entry's. Thanks!! While pictures are nice, some details are better, like: Mfg, Railroad, Class or Wheel Arrangement, Cab #..........This way I can do a cut and paste......not trying to leave anyone out....had some double entry's along the way which is not a problem, hopefully I didn't list too many things twice.....

WM Shay #6 has been done by Lionel and Right of Way Industries.  She's still operating at the Cass Scenic Railway in WV.

Not sure if this one counts, the MTH/Railking 4-6-0 "Ten wheeler" is based on a Walt Disney Railroad steam engine (which I beleive was "saved" and rebuilt from an engine they found in Mexico or somewhere in Central America).  In fact the 2013 "Great American Circus" version was decorated almost exactly the same as the "Walter E. Disney" at Walt Disney World  - even down to the painting on the headlight housing (obviously with different name on tender and cab).

guess the Canadians are not reading this. How about CN U-1-F 4-8-2 done by MTH. I think its on display now but I have seen it under steam.

Well yeah Pete! , we saw it. The MTH engine  is  a keeper.   I don't know where it is at the moment.

I know where it  was when I first started with the railway. 1965 . Fenced in on display in front of the Jasper Alberta station . .  "Bullet Nosed Betty"

There are very few small prototypes in the list although there are many more small steamers extant.

Western Md Shay #6 at Cass these days was modeled by Lionel.

C&O 4-6-0 416 at Baltimore was modeled badly by Lionel and better by WBB.

John Bull at the smithsonian by Lionel

Best Friend of Charleston at NS HQ by Lionel

William Mason at B&O museum by MTH

I forget the CNJ Camelback # at B&O but it has been done by Lionel and MTH

The WARR General......

Latest Inputs. Can't list if you don't provide; Mfg(s), Railroad, Class or Wheel Arrangement, Cab Number. I'm not trying to be difficult but some suggestions are lacking these elements and I wasn't looking to do the research. Some have suggested models scheduled to be released......we can add these later if and when they actually arrive.
