OK guys... think I am about done buying used equipment. This is the Legacy equipped 7055, which has all the working strobe and marker lights, as well as the smoke unit. I have had it on the rails now for 24 hours, and it smokes like crazy for the first day. Now I have the cab lights flashing an SOS code of sorts, Three short flashes, then a pause and three more flashes, repeating as long as the track is powered up. The unit was said to be new in box, but upon opening it, it was clear it was a used piece. Any ideas before I have to open up another locomotive?

On the last page of the owners manual. 3 blinks is a smoke unit fan problem.
Have you tried a reset? You get 3 chances to reset while the engine is powered up. Then the smoke unit shuts down until power is removed . When powered back up you get 3 resets again.
If a reset doesn't work you can try a drop of oil on the motor shaft otherwise you may need to order a replacement.
I believe this loco is from about 2011.Which was the start of Lionels epidemic of smoke unit failures.
Btw. I feel your pain. I'm done buying new stuff lol!
I tried the reset procedure as described and it failed to reset... what is next?
Next would be to open it up. As I mentioned above. I would try a drop of oil on the motor shaft to see if that frees things up.
If the smoke unit fan was noisy prior to when it quit, it will likely need to be replaced altogether.
You can order a replacement fan directly from Lionel:

The drawback is. They charge flat rate shipping
There is no output at all, fan or no fan. I am just going to send it back to the seller and get something else.
