It looks like there is not a spring pad like the earlier PS 2.0 engines I have. I would appreciate any advice on how to troubleshoot the problem? I am running conventional with an MTH Z-4000.

Have you attempted a transformer reset from t eh Z4000? The directions for doing so are in the engine's instruction manual.
If you are unable to get it to work, I've been successful with these LED's. Solder directly to the motor tabs - and they'll be directional (conventional, dcs or tmcc). I haven't burned one out yet.

PS - These would also be a perfect fit if you drilled out the nose headlights as per the prototype.

Nice tip..so no effect on DCS operation? Do the lights ramp up or near constant brightness?
These have a wide ratio, maybe power up around 2 volts, I've not gone above 13 volts track power to my engine - this is a Williams (wired in factory parallel) these are already rockets. That FP45 midtrain is a dummy.

Chas, I know it's a diesel and I know it doesn't have smoke. But Press the smoke button to turn it on and then try the lights. There have been some problems about smoke/lights interference.
Why bother with LED conversion until the problem is diagnosed? At this point, due to a dearth in data, we don't know if the problem is board output, connection between board and lights, burned-out lamps. We don't know the loco model number.
If there's no spring contacts, why doesn't Chas see a wire connector??????
