I have an MTH 30-20315-1 Railking Evolution Hybrid loco. This engine is about a month old, I preordered it and picked it up in late July.

This evening, I was cleaning up in the basement and decided to let it run around the layout a few times. I noticed, at very low (crawl) throttle settings, the charging lights seem "confused". Instead of going in one inward (toward the center of the loco) and outward (toward ends), they seem to flip/flop and flicker. Is it supposed to do this? I attempted an iPhone video to show this, particularly in the beginning of the video. Otherwise, it runs great. Hope I don't have an issue as I purposely ordered this engine because I thought the lights were cool!

I should note that once I speed the engine up, the lights appear to "stabilize", although admittedly it is difficult to track when going faster around the layout.

In the following video, which should start in the middle (or go in to about 2:40), as the engine slows to a crawl the charging lights appear to change directions a couple times.

I don't have one but my understanding is the lights change direction when the battery is charging vs. discharging.  I wonder if at crawl speeds the speed control (acceleration/deceleration) becomes more "active" and hence the behavior represents what goes on in a prototype hybrid system if dynamic braking is being modeled.  Additionally, I'd think this effect might be more profound if running conventional when track voltage are lower...though this is just speculation.

My apologies, I'm just seeing the replies now. I found some Youtube videos (and thanks for posting the one above, didn't see that) that also showed the lights quickly changing direction when the engine slows/speeds up. Guess it is supposed to do that! Cool!

I still think I may need to take it in as the right side clearly, when compared to the left side, has some lights not working and the right side flickers and the lights don't "run" like they should down the sides. More just flash/flicker. When looking at it, there is a clear difference in the two sides.
