I received back in Nov 2012, didnt work right outta the box.

Tryed contacting MTH 3 times with no success. Took the locomotive back

to my hobby dealer 2 weeks ago and he shipped it off to MTH.

We will see what happens.

sorry!

Toke it outta the box fri night after I received it and it

ran great. ALL the bells and whistles. Got up saturday morn.

fired up the power and the loco started up without me doing anything,

idle sounds only. Pushed the start up button on the DCS remote

that came with the set and nothing. It just sat there and idled.

Hooked up my Z1000 transformer and it ran fine. tryed my other standard

gauge locos with the DCS remote and they ran fine. Tryed the New Jersey

central again. and nothing, no motion, bells or whistles, it just sits there,

after powering up by itself and idle sounds only.

That is silly advice.

If you go to MTH website. Under service trouble shooting and keep clicking.

They actually have you opening the shell of your engine to check for wiring problems etc. One of the first steps is to reset the engine using bells and whistles on the transformer.

Within the past couple of weeks, our MTH NASC successfully repaired two customers STD Gauge PS3 locomotives.  One was the JC and the other one Christmas.  They both had the same exact problem as described above.  We found the issue, and as it turned out, it was an easy "in and out" quick repair making for happy customers.

We just got in a pallet load of more sets today.  I wish the Christmas season was starting all over again now.

Jim:

I just came across this post, and you are right on about silly advice, although the word "silly" is too tame for me. Imagine being afraid to use the reset command for fear of losing your warranty! What a joke. But what can you expect from a "hobby dealer" with only one shoulder.

MTH replaced the board. If a reset was all that was needed, why replace the board? So in the posters case it turned out to be more.

Although, trying a reset would be the first thing I would do. It doesn't void any warranty.

so ive come across a new problem.

fire up the locomotive and she runs

around great, chuffing, smoking.

then for no reason, I get no response.

Its a run away loco. she wont stop, no bells

or whistles or sounds. she just runs.

have to unplug the transformer. and let her sit,

then she will go back to regular service.

so the gremlins came to roost again

over the weekend.

was running my Jersey Central Blue Comet set

and she had another run away session.

No matter what buttons I pushed, she would not stop.

had to unplug the tranformer. Pluged it back in and then she would not

do anything, no lights, power, sounds, nothing.

turned power off. came back the next morning and ran her, and everything works.

????????????????????? Its got me baffled!!!!!!!!

You might look to see if all of the plugs are properly seated on the boards.

I have had this happen on a long cab 3245-it would run fine, then speed up suddenly, then slow back down.  The plug from the speed control reader had worked partially out of the board in shipping.

Pushing it back down corrected the problem.

If the engine seems dead now. I would do a manual reset (with no DCS signal on the track) and see if that revives it.
