Mechanically...nothing. During the 81/82 restoration they changed the headlight...that was it. During her excursion career she went from having twin dynamos to a single I believe.
Simply a great, home-built (Roanoke) engine - easy on the eyes and power to spare!
Personally, I am more elated about 611's restoration than the Big Boy.

I chased her on her test run from the Irondale Shops in Birmingham to Chattanooga, starting from Attalla, Al. The late Bill Purdie was at the throttle.
611 was already the most modern Steam locomotive ever built. Roller barring on all axles, automatic lubricators. I guess if you add a GPS receiving unit that might quality as new technology!!
