About 4 years ago, I converted a MTH RK Doodlebug with ERR Cruise Commander and their sound chip.  I power my layout using two 135 bricks and a TPC300.  I set track power (selecting TR1, M, and spin the red knob) at 15-16V vice the full 18V and  the Doodlebug worked fine.

I did not power up the unit for six months.  When I placed the Doodlebug on the layout and powered up using the above method, the sound immediately came on and the bell began ringing. Could not stop the bell or blow horn.  If I gently throttled up, the unit would take of at medium speed.  I also tried reprogramming the unit number to no avail.

I then booted track power to full voltage on the CAB1 (selecting TR1, L, and boost). I reprogrammed the unit number, shut power off, and again powered track (TR1, L, and boost) – the Doodlebug operates perfectly.

So long as I restart track power this way, unit works fine.  If I then turn off track power and restart using TR1, M, and the red knob to get 15V; the unit immediately reverts to sound on, bell ringing.

What’s going on???
