Happy Thanksgiving all!

I've been a member for a few years and have looked to OGR forums when I needed some direction. The members have always had lots of great ideas, stellar information and personal knowledge to share with others so I thought this will be the perfect place to share a New Build!

I'm starting a new layout , moving from the garage to a large attic space about 17'x20',  I'll be posting some pics and progress along the way.

The space has flooring down and some benchwork started so it's a fairly blank space and open to ideas and comments.

I plan on insulating the space and eventually finishing walls etc.

I have 0-27 3 rail Lionel track and 0 gauge Lionel Fastrack. Track power available is a Lionel ZW-R 275 watt and (2) CW-80's. I'm interested in TMCC but don't know much about it so all info members provide will be considered.  I have a good understanding of wiring and would like to incorporate block sections in the build also.

I have older 50's powered locomotives and 1 newer Lionel loco with remote and Bluetooth control. Looking to upgrade to a few newer Locomotives with all the bells and whistles...

I'd like to run long trains continuously and use both 0-27 and Fastrack together, side by side, elevated and gradual grades. I don't have a set plan but I have a few I've been looking at recently that have at least least a couple of places to turn trains around.

I'm thinking a nice size freight yard, a maintenance yard, small town(s), a tunnel or 2, plenty of sidings and switching and any other ideas members contribute.

Here's our space and thanks for any help you may pass along!

Looks like you have a few good ideas for your layout. The space you have is big, which is good for an O-gauge layout. Allow me to make a few suggestions to make your layout better.

1. Finish insulating the room before you continue building the layout. Then you don't have to worry about the benchwork getting in the way.

2. Regarding TMCC (or Legacy): It's really easy to use. I use Legacy on my layout, and I love it. Here are a few other tips that I can give you.

-Buy Lionel's Cab-1L Base/Remote; that will help get you started. If you can find one, a Legacy #990 Command Set is a good idea (that's what I use on my layout), but the #990 is no longer being produced. It might be hard to find.

-Lionel's upcoming Base-3 (it will ship sometime next year) is a good idea. The new base will allow you to run your Bluetooth loco with a Legacy remote or the new app.

-Use Legacy Powermasters and Powermaster Adapter Cables between your ZW and the track to run your postwar locos with Legacy/TMCC. I have a PM on my layout, and it is a great thing to have.

-Power your switches off a separate fixed power supply (like one of your CW80s).

-Legacy/TMCC will also control switches if you use ASCs, SC-2s, or Command-Controlled Fastrack Switches.

Good luck on your layout build. Happy Thanksgiving as well.

(Note: your photos are not showing up.)

The advice to finish the room is spot on; you’ll save yourself a lot of aggravation. Two items for your consideration:

1. Consider what you are going to do for HVAC because Cape May summers and winters can cause concern for your equipment. You might want to look into mini splits.

2. Give some thought to a backdrop; at least paint the pertinent areas a sky blue.

Sorry I messed up the attachments. Thank you all for the replies, I will be insulating, doing drywall and some painting to finish the area as you all have suggested I'm starting with the large wall then the sides, the ceiling will be last since it will be a little more work.  The mini splits are a good idea, I do have heat and return lines up there since the heating unit is in the attic already, but I'd have to see if it could handle the additional space. Thanks Dylan for the TMCC information. An around the room layout is what I've been thinking about, just as Jan said plenty of room for bump outs.

Next stop Home Depot, all aboard!

Looks like a great space. Definitely finish it off before building the layout. You don't see too many attics with that headroom too. Check out @Putnam Division Peter's layout build thread. Lot's of great ideas there.

I agree that a ductless split will be a wise investment. I live on Long Island so our seasons are pretty much the same. Summer heat and humidity will give you fits up there. I would suggest that you add a ceiling below the ridge as well. Looks like you can get about 8' clear, and it will make sheetrocking easier and also someplace to install some hihats.
Insulation should be kept off the underside of the roof. HD sells a rigid foam product that will do the job.
Add outlets around the room for sure, plus a dedicated circuit for the layout.
Have you considered adding a window in that gable wall?

I bought a Cab1L system last year and I love it. As Dylan said, the 990's are not available but I've read that the 1L handheld will work with Cab3 system.

One more suggestion for your topic- edit the date of the topic when you post updates.

I'm making the popcorn and will watch from here!
