will the puffing smoke unit from John work on a non puffing fan driven tmcc engine as is the JLC challenger and is an easy installation.

That's exactly the target market for the Super-Chuffer. I have three Lionel locomotives, including one challenger, in for the Super-Chuffer upgrade for that very reason.

If you want the Rule-17 lighting, you need the LED headlight. However, that's optional, you can keep the existing headlight the way it is, that doesn't affect the smoke performance. You also don't have to use the cab light control if you don't want to, again that doesn't affect the smoke operation.
Hi John, I'm not trying to steal this thread but ..... I have a Lionel Dreyfuss Hudson That I want to convert. I believe it's a puffer not fan smoke,I'm wondering how your optic sensor is working out and will you have something available as a kit?

Well, first off, you'd have to have a fan driven smoke unit to use the Super-Chuffer, it isn't applicable to the mechanical smoke unit.
I have a design for the optical sensor, but I'm working on a more robust design that takes less "tweaking", that might become a kit.

I too am going to ask a slightly off-topic question:
A Williams conventional J steamer.
I'd like to add a fan-driven smoke unit but would like more of a sync'd puff output rather than just a constant stream of smoke.
Are there any products to accomplish this?

If you want to stay conventional, I'd add the conventional smoke unit, it it'll fit the PS/1 smoke unit is a good choice, lots of smoke over a wide voltage range and it has it's own power regulator and fan power. The Lionel smoke unit also has fan power, but the smoke will vary more depending on the track power setting.
To get puffing smoke, you need to add a chuff switch that interrupts the fan power, typically a reed switch and magnets on a wheel.
