Hello all,

This December I have made the plunge into O. I have a HO train that was mine from when I was like 8 in the 80s. We have used it for the last 10 or so years around the Christmas Tree. After years of service, the cars have given up. The couplers are shot and they derail. This is even with upgrades to metal wheels a few years back. Thus I was able to get permission to get a new train.

We went with a O gauge MTH starter set, 4-6-0 Steamer passenger set. We also picked up some additional cars and track. I have to say that I stumbled into being a genius as I laid the track by the love seat where my wife sits most of the time. The track under foot was not happening for her. Thus back to the train store (Leesburg Hobbies in Leesburg, VA, great shop) for more track. We now have a very kewl layout with 4 switches, a 90deg cross, and loop around the living room. We added a few additional cars and made a LEGO gantry crane. You can see our layout here: http://youtu.be/tn5WCAJfjrM

The kids love the set and both can control the train with the remote commander (6 and 8). The only problem is that we caught a box with the train and killed the motor. Frown Thus it is at the shop now waiting for a motor. Also, the passenger cars burn up lights, so I think I will change them for LEDs soon.

Glad to have found this forum. I am sure that I will have questions and comments. Talk at you later.

Bill

Way to jinx the poor guy! Smile Except at those dang switches! But then not nearly as often as in N or HO. I'd suggest something stiff between the carpet and the switches. Something big enough to support the switch and the adjacent track. Otherwise, I love my RealTrax.

Also, if it is the motor, it isn't to tough to swap it out.
Also, Also, LEDs, I haven't found a direct plug in LED swap out,http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/bl-212.html
Is from one the site sponsors and you should be able to mount these, or another Evans LED, for good lighting.
Welcome Bill and Happy New Year to you
. What a terrific first train layout! Brought back memories for me too of my American Flyer in the very early fifties playing on the floor and snaking the track around the furniture. Mine were rarely any bigger than your first effort here.
You chose well with the started set from MTH. You'll notice the smooth steady slow speed running that 'cruise control' allows and the great smoke too.
Hope your shop get you locomotive up and running quickly!

You'd need a bunch of these to properly light a coach. A much better solution is the LED strips several of us have used to light passenger cars, and the bonus is it's much cheaper to "roll your own". If you look at my posts in this thread, you'll see how I did some passenger cars, total cost for the car was less than $10.

hello all, this is my first post but I am not a newbie.

First of all, I'm not trying to start a "Brand war". this is what I have to say: I have had MTH products for 1 and 1/2 years now. I started out with one of MTH's
2-8-0 starter sets. guess where I am now. I have replaced my old, unreliable HO trains with an all-MTH layout with DCS and I am working on scenery and my dad is working on Chicago's LaSalle street station. our current layout has to have two terminus stations and a double track mainline. complete with 4% grade. you have already made a huge jump into the hobby. sadly, I don't have any pictures of the original layout on my dining room table, but I will include a link to my youtube channel.

Shut your layout down for nothing except to make it better- happy new year
