He's referring to an alpha character adjacent to the road number on the cab as seen on the 3971:

This letter, or check digit, was included to enhance the accuracy of equipment reporting. For example, in the event an employee was recording a unit number and made an error in a numerical character, it was unlikely an additional error would be commited when recording the alpha character.

CNJ, this just goes to show how much NS was actually listening to "real" railfans out there.  It's very commendable.  I emailed historian Ron Flanary, who was working with NS Execs on the Heritage Units, the idea on the check code, and they made it happen.  NS deserves some kind of award for their goodwill on this program.
