The risk if it's not there is that if the non-derailing link on the curved turnout rail fractures it's solder joint on the underside (as they are prone to do), then it can drop and short to the baseplate causing the mechanism to always want to be in the turnout position. If this happens there is no choice other than tear the switch out for repairs. 😫
