Who would DARE use a straight razor on a moving train?
This was the New York Central System at pretty close to it's peak ! Fear not the straight razor, or the cup of joe filled to the brim. As for Hudson's ...this is the best. A perfectly groomed J1e; 5336 ! The heavyweight Century had to be an experience like no other, and nothing was going to touch it ....'til Henry Dreyfuss came along ! Thanks for sharing...this is absolutely priceless ! BTW, I'll take my "Gibson" in the Van Twiller.
Your welcome being that I was born to late to see trains like these. It was all freight when I came into this world. Now get this many of the boxcar of the 1940s still being used.Heck I even got to see a wooden boxcar with steel bracing.WhenI think back its funny how somethings turn out.I have wondered just how powerful the hudson was?
Now look what you made me do... watched 5 historic railroad documentaries tonight!
Thanks for posting...
Classic RR Black & White, this channel has a lot of classic films. I wonder where he finds all these films. I have been watching this channel for years.
Is it 2 chuffs of 4 chuffs, in this video? lol

Great videos. That barber must have had a very steady hand.
The closest you gonna get today is the Royal Canadian Pacific, but you'll have to settle for CP F units instead of that immaculate J1e Hudson. Tell Nancy Mosayani I sent ya !
This film portrays an era when railroads provided a complete, perfectly integrated transportation system for moving all kinds of freight, and passengers. And done with motive power that burned domestic fuels - coal and oil. Alas, entropy and "progress" altered all of this. But who knows, when oil and fossil fuels become scarce, railroads may well resume their role. Fun film. Fun to imagine life at that time.
Thanks for the great ride!
Nice film...

At the :24 sec mark "3 rail". I never knew there was 3 rail. What was the third rail for?

By gum, you're right!
My guess would be it's a guard rail prior to entering track pan (for taking on water on the fly) territory.

I see adjoining tracks have it too. Looks like it's in center, so it wouldn't be dual guage. Never have seen guard rail in center.
Pretty neat.
Your 700E is correct !
At 2:10 the engineer brings the train to a stop for a cow on the track, what is the wheel the engineer is spinning. Reminds me of european locos.
Power reverse gear (or mebby not power as this would never happen on the Central, in Hudson country). On the old Put. or out in Shipshewanna....possibly !
Thanks for posting I enjoyed that video.
