This was the New York Central System at pretty close to it's peak !  Fear not the straight razor, or the cup of joe filled to the brim. As for Hudson's ...this is the best.  A perfectly groomed J1e; 5336 !  The heavyweight Century had to be an experience like no other, and nothing was going to touch it ....'til Henry Dreyfuss came along !  Thanks for sharing...this is absolutely priceless !   BTW, I'll take my "Gibson" in the Van Twiller.

Your welcome being that I was born to late to see trains like these. It was all freight when I came into this world. Now get this many of the boxcar of the 1940s still being used.Heck I even got to see a wooden boxcar with steel bracing.WhenI think back its funny how somethings turn out.I have wondered just how powerful the hudson was?

This film portrays an era when railroads provided a complete, perfectly integrated transportation system for moving all kinds of freight, and passengers. And done with motive power that burned domestic fuels - coal and oil. Alas, entropy and "progress" altered all of this. But who knows, when oil and fossil fuels become scarce, railroads may well resume their role. Fun film. Fun to imagine life at that time.

At the :24 sec mark "3 rail". I never knew there was 3 rail. What was the third rail for?

By gum, you're right!

3-rail NYC

My guess would be it's a guard rail prior to entering track pan (for taking on water on the fly) territory.
