Hi guys,

I am trying to figure out what set we would have originally bought that would have had 3 passenger cars #2432, 2436 and ?  We have the Clifton and Summit, but I cannot remember the 3rd one.

I am asking because I found more info on my 6468-X Tucson box car.  It only came with set #1535W in 1955.  This set included an A-B Sante Fe 2243.  I always thought that the Sante Fe was part of the passenger car set because we always ran the passenger cars with it.

That is obviously not the case because I have all the cars + 2243 A-B and transformer to make set 1535W and that is also the only way to have acquired the 6468-X boxcar.

So now I am trying to figure out what set my Grandfather would have purchased to get the passenger cars.  He could have purchased the passenger cars separately also.  The only other engine we had that I can think would have come with passenger cars is a 2016 steamer.

Does anyone know if there was a passenger set that included the 2016?

I asked my uncle yesterday if he remembers, but he only remembers being captivated by the 2243 A-B and doesn't remember what else came with it.  He also only remembers running the passenger cars with it.

The passenger cars (1955-1958), 2016 (1955-1956) and 1535W set (1955) are all right around the same time period.

Thanks for any help!  None of this is really important other than to satisfy my own curiosity.

The other one (third car) is most likely the "Elizabeth" passenger car. Probably the silver 2400 series cars with the Lionel Lines "red lettering."

I'm sure one of the PW experts will come up with the set.

EDIT: And you're correct that the passenger cars could have been a separate purchase. They were included in quite a few sets (like with the Texas Special A-B) but were certainly out there individually.

Thank you!  Yes, Newark is the other Pullman.

I’ve always admired these 2400 series cars. Having worked on quite a few of them I have learned to appreciate the engineering that went into them.  They are put together in an interesting manner with just enough complexity to make them fun to work on.  I’ve also come to admire the trucks on these cars as real works of art (to me our trains are industrial art).  The uncoupling set up is quite a feat of mechanical engineering.
They are also a bit heavy reflecting the quality of the materials used.

The detailing, I believe, was probably about as good as you could expect for the 40’s and 50’s   That’s not said meaning that the detailing is disappointing, to the contrary, I admire the detailing on the plastic

.
I guess I do like them as I have three sets. The silver with red lettering, the green ones and the silver Santa Fe with the blue strip. ( I remember when I first saw them. It was in the Lionel showroom. What perplexed me was that  these blue striped cars were pulled by a silver and RED engine. I thought that the engine colors should have matched the cars. I thought to talk to somebody about this, but I couldn’t find anyone that I thought would listen to me.  I must have realized that being a 12 year old from Brooklyn didn’t carry much weight).

Funny you mentioned the blue stripe cars. I recently picked up an excellent+ condition Santa Fe 2343 AA set (my first ever!) and have been looking at passenger car sets to run with them. I saw some of the blue cars the other day somewhere (probably on the auction site) and thought they were very attractive despite not being "a match" for the diesels.

We'll see. My search continues and fortunately Lionel made plenty of choices.
