This actually fixes a bigger issue. The sound cutting out all together and having to "reset" the engine using the reset key. This means the engine comes to a stop as well.

Lionel tech guys made it so if there is a power interruption the sound kicks back on with the next chuff input I believe. I'm sure Rudy will have a good answer.
Im glad they did this. I hate resetting some my older engines.

It is most evident when you have the labor chuff intensity set to maximum (using the EFX keys).  The sound cut-off is quite noticeable in this scenario.

I would like to add that this only occurs (at least in my situation) when the Big Boy is rolling through the switch at very low speeds, let us call it: less than speed step 25. Anything greater than that, the cut-off does not occur.

Guess I have to chalk this one up to a dead spot in the switch....

You've identified what's happening. When the tender loses track power, the next chuff will wake it back up and turn the sound system back on. However, it will restart at a nominal labor/effort level. Because heavy labor causes both tonal and volume changes to the chuffing, an abrupt labor change would be perceived as a drop in volume, although the actual railsounds master and background/blend volume settings are not changing. To restore the previous labor setting, get the CAB2 remote to send an updated labor command. Next time it happens, wiggle the train brake slider and see if that restores your previous labor value without having to stop the locomotive.

Rudy,

I appreciate the insights here!!  Typically, what I have been doing to combat the sound cut-off, is to simply depress the EFX down button (one notch).  This restores the labor setting, albeit one notch lower than the previous setting prior to cut-off.  I will attempt your recommendation by toggling the train brake slider as well.

Out of curiosity, is this a known issue?  I am in fact using Lionel's Fastrack system, so was a bit surprised as to the sound cut-off (this only occurs as the Big Boy rolls over a switch at slow speeds).

Best,

Michael

Chipset, I am getting a little tired of your constant whining about how we moderate this forum.

If you don't like the way we do things here...

This post should be a sticky at the top of the forum for all the curmudgeons to read

Yes and Yes!

I tried what Rudy recommended using the Train Brake Slider, and sure enough, the sound is restored to the proper volume. This is great.

Then I cleaned the track in that area, and now there is no problem whatsoever. I noticed that there were a few dark spots on the Atlas NS track rails in that area, and removing these must have solved the problem.

A double-whammy of good news!

Thanks to everyone!

Michael, the technique you described with the EFX keys will work fine too. Changing throttle, boost or brake will also update the engine labor.

I hope Lionel does some more neat things with the VisionLine Features. I can hear a moderate Quilling, not quite as distinct as the VL Challenger, But, The Echo Effect is very much there. The Whistle is really great whether its the Real Deal, or Not the Real Deal....I would never know.  Now, back to playing with the Big Boy. Happy Railroading.

What exactly do you mean by tweaking of systems, what exactly was done?

Jojo Fry makes an excellent point, one that often gets overlooked. The newest legacy locos are extremely sensative to dirty track. I've had TMCC locos run fine over track that would stop my Legacy k4 dead no sound and a blinking cab light.

Cleaned the track and runs just fine. Even though track may "appear" to be clean it only tacks a slight bit of residue to affect the new Legacy stuff.

Whenever I have an operational issue,I always clean the track as the first step in the process of elimination finding the solution.

Fortunately, I never had to go beyond this first step, but I have gotten quite spooked by the crazy things my legacy locos have done on dirty track.

The best solutions are the easy ones Alex! Glad you got it fixed!!

I know some of us like our engines to smoke .. I am one of that likes alot of  smoke ..I tweak the smoke units on every engine I own..I think these visionline big boys units are built better then any I have seen .. But I wanted mine to smoke more..

While I feel that those who love to "tweak" their engine and modify them to suit them is great, I just hope they are not the same ones that will tear Lionel a new one when they need service (under the 2 year warranty time) and Lionel charges them for it.

Again not a comment on making the loco your own by whatever means, just a commentary on the warranty implications.  I know a lot of guys here are more than fine with that.  Alex, GRJ and others are into these engines all the time and are very comfortable but I fear some of the folks who are not will get a wake up call if service is needed and they've opened it up and "tweaked" it.

A big thanks to the Lionel tech team for improving the newer engine's response to power drop outs.  I too hated having to resetting the entire engine.  Having the chuff rate automatically reset the engine is ingenious!  Is this feature listed in the manual or the catalog?  It should be something you brag about!

I don't think it's publicized. But a nice blurb in the manual would be handy.

Hi Marty,

I'm weak. I bought a 4014. I'm especially weak or soft when it comes to trains and Big Boys.  Put it on it's back to service, lube and check do the over thing.

Well... here's what I found. The very Back truck on the tender wouldn't turn. The axle was bent at factory because the left wheel was pushed on too far inside on the axle and in assembly when it was tightened down on the bottom, they did not see that the wheel came in contact the with the rear cap screw on the back... and thus put a bend on the axle. And a pretty good one at that. I never did check but I'm pretty sure it's the same as axle as the JLC Big Boys for a replacement part. Anyway I bet I played with that axle for 1 1/2 to 2 hours tweaking or bending the axle back as good as I could and moved the rear wheel out to where it should be with a puller. It still has a very, very slight wobble... barely noticeable. But this is what's weird. I kind of like it. It was made with an imperfection and I like it. It gives the thing a little personality of it's own and I'm going to keep it that way! To me, it just made this particular Loco a little more special. I'm sure not perfect, it's not perfect so... I like it!

Sorry for the babble. I just thought I'd tell you guys the story.

Have a good one!

That's Great.  Can you describe what you did to make it smoke more?
