The giveaway will start this Thursday morning. The first one will be simple. Just "like" or comment on the post that will appear on Thursday and we will randomly select a winner on Friday. New giveaway will start every Thursday. Sometimes we might as a trivia question, ask you to post something, etc. Nothing too complicated, we just want to have some fun and reward those of you who interact with us on our Facebook page. Looking forward to having fun this summer.

PS. I like being named the Facebook Guru. It's a bit more flattering than being called the Howard Stern of O gauge

Thanks Derek and OGR.

I 'liked' OGR on FaceBook a while back, and I see there are 838 of us at this moment.  Like any other media, it is what one makes it.  I know there are various reasons why many of us over 55 don't use FaceBook, but I find it a rewarding venue, if one pays attention to security settings just like any other online venue.

I'm looking forward to the contests.

May I please add to the post above that those of you that have not been Facebook users, there is no more info you have to give than what you have given on this forum.  We really want to encourage all of you to join in the fun...even if it means that you will have to set up a Facebook account...  We will make it worth your while with the neat stuff coming up...and we do have an even greater BIG prize after this contest.  I can't tell anymore otherwise I would give away the surprise!!  In any case, we do appreciate all of you and are thankful if you join us on Facebook...

Thanks Everyone!

Alan

This "Free Stuff" giveaway is for people who DO use Facebook. Let them have their fun, OK?

No hater here......the OGR site is MY social media hangout. Everyone I know uses Facebook....I just don;t have the time.

Just an opinion here.....hanging out here, being a positive contributor and patronizing OGR Forum sponsors would be more important than outside media.....but I don't understand it any way.

But I do say thanks for this 'social media' hang out.

I look at it this way Better odds then in all honesty thank you for setting this up. hurry up Thursday get here not only is it close to the weekend. there will be a giveaway what could be better. But , I don't know why I'm excited I have never won a thing in my life. other than some stickers for doing a really big burn out. I spent more in rubber than I won in stickers here's the burnout !

Facebook?  What's Facebook?  We're already on the best forum there is. Guess I'll have to get my wife to show me how to get set up and use it to try for the free stuff. What's next? Our employers will start having the IT Depts monitoring OGR once they find out about it now like Facebook & all the social chat forums. Guess we going to have to behave now.

Thanks guys...just think of the OGR Facebook page as an extension of this Forum.  The big difference will be that Facebook may be a place that OGR can help even more folks find out about our great hobby.  When we were thinking of a larger venue to promote model railroading and O-gauge in particular, it seemed Facebook was the natural place to get to the masses.  AND...many of you have correctly suggested that the younger crowd needs to be exposed to our hobby...so...again, Facebook seemed the logical place to do this!  We are trying to do our part to insure the hobby of O-gauge railroading continues for a long time and appreciate any of you joining us in this effort.

Thanks for your support here on the Forum, by subscribing to the magazine, and through your advertising and sponsorships.....and now with Facebook!

Alan

Oh, wow.  You, too, are making me feel old.  To my knowledge I've never done Facebook or twitter: a person has to draw the line somewhere and I drew it at social media sites and cell-phones without real tactile buttons.  But Facebook is a good idea to get younger people involved, no doubt.  I wish you luck and hope it isn't too much work that keeps you away from your layout.

Hey, if you want to grow this hobby and get anyone younger than me into it you MUST be on Facebook or Pinterest or something of that nature.  FORUMs are great, but in order to reach a new user you must get their attention where they spend their free/bored time.  While many people on this forum balk at the idea of being on Facebook its a fact that Facebook, Twitter, and social media of that nature are where the younger generation currently are hanging out.

I think I was the last generation of children who's parents built a Lionel layout for when we were young.  That is what jump started me into the hobby a few years ago.   But these kids today (oh my God I just said that) have grown up with over 100 channels of tv, home video game systems, and home computers.  They need something to reach out and show them what you can do with all the new technology and stuff that Lionel and MTH are making these days!  I think a Facebook page is perfect for doing that.

As stated by Rich above, in order to participate, you have to sign in to Facebook with an account.  If you don't have one, it is as easy as the account you created here on the Forum...perhaps easier!!.  There are already a lot of neat train topics and pictures on our Facebook page that don't appear here....in particular a layout I have never seen before and a spectacular one at that!

TGP (Terry):  No list but think about all the things that OGR already sells plus some neat surprises in the future!

Thanks guys!

Alan

is that the contest?

On the right side of the page there was a 50 year old woman looking for a boyfriend.

i hope that's not the contest because Ginny will repossess the layout.

Hmmm the Photo Contest App should not be visible. That was to be used at a later date. I'll make some changes and that should go away. As to the contest itself, it will appear directly on our timeline. There are no add on apps of any kind that will be required. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I have had a FaceBook account for a while now.  However I only first got on the OGR FaceBook page the day the FaceBook links were put on the top of the forum page, so I hadn't looked around much.  I saw the Photo Contest link too and clicked it thinking it may have been something that was done in the past.  I saw the same thing.  Derek got rid of it, he's the man.

Yes, I realized fight off that this is something OGR is trying out to appeal to younger people where they are.  All of us 50's and older guys have lamented younger folks not getting into the hobby as we did, and have stated some of the reasons.  Some of us have given examples of sharing the hobby with youngsters.  I think it is commendable that the OGR staff are thinking outside the box a bit on this one.

I am like Jhainer a bit.  I never won anything until last fall when the company I work for promoted employees looking at the company's customer facing Web site.  Then we had to answer a few questions to prove we were there.  I was one of 3 out of 1500 who won an iPad Mini.  I wouldn't have spent the money on one, but I have put it to good use.

J, maybe you will have a similar experience!!

Mark...thanks so much for being so positive about what we are trying to do...and that goes to the rest of you that also feel this way.  Those that don't, we understand and respect your opinion but as Rich said above, lets see if we can make this fun and keep it positive.

bigdodgetrain:  that app is one that is intended for a future contest that is being planned and will be perfectly safe since it is an OGR event.  Derek has taken care of it now but as we progress with our ideas for Facebook, you will see the app again when the time comes for that particular contest.  Derek IS the man!!

Thanks,

Alan

As Rich said" Age is a state of mind, not a number". I just tell people when they ask me how I'm doing: "Not bad for an old fart, for a young pup I'm in trouble"! Probably what will happen trying to figure out Facebook.  Just remember who have jobs most companies either block it from the company web use and/or have their tech support staff monitoring it and other social media and your company AND personal e-mails. Don't type in anything that could get you in trouble where you work. Already seen it happen to former employees.  I think it's a great way to get interest with younger hobbists and hope some of us can win some prizes. Thank you OGR!

Real quick:

If you want to do Facebook and keep it separate from all else:

Sign up for a free Gmail account.  Only use that email address for Facebook.  Don't link it to anything else.  If you already have Gmail, still get a new, separate email address on Gmail.

Then, sign up for a free Google Phone number.   It can be any available area code and number you desire.

Use the above to sign up for Facebook.

I keep separate email accounts, sometimes thru different providers, to do music business business, personal business, online business, and online forums.

It keeps me spam free on my personal and business accounts.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.  My 77 year old father just clicked like on OGR's FB page    He agrees with Rich.   It's (age) is just a number.

I've been somewhat misunderstood.  I agree age is a state of mind and am still very active.  That's why I don't waste time on Facebook and don't spend extra time on this computer doing all the Premium Membership pages.  I just played golf 5 days in a row then came home and did yard work, mowed the grass etc.  I have other priorities besides sitting on my butt in front of a computer.

.....

Dennis

OK...one more time.  First:  "EscapeRocks" suggestion above is absolutely on spot and perfect for those that are not Facebook fans....but still want to participate.

Second:  Rich and I were trying to decide if posting this announcement was a good idea as we expected "some" naysayers.  The point is, PLEASE keep this positive and if you don't want to do it for your own reasons, then fine...no need to post here and tell others why.  We really don't want to lock the thread since the intention is to have fun with this and help promote the hobby and perhaps bring more folks with great ideas here on the forum for all of us to enjoy.

Thanks,

Alan

Malcolm

I'm a bit younger than Malcolm, but I have a good many friends on Facebook.  It is great to keep up with what the kids are doing.  As a bonus I have become reacquainted with some old friends I haven't seen in 30 to 40 years.  I have also gotten to know a cousin I haven't seen or even talked to on the phone since 1965!

I have a sticky note on my laptop so I remember the contest Thursday.  While I wouldn't mind winning a prize, I hope the big prize is won.  That is that a lot of younger folks will read and see what we are about, and get into model and toy trains!
