A friend of mine just gave me a new(unused) TMCC and CAB1 remote and a steam engine that he bought in 2002. I run DCS and am interested in trying TMCC. Do I need to do or should I do any upgrades to this old TMCC system or handheld unit in order to run the newer TMCC engines?

No upgrades needed or available, just plug it in and run it. 
THere are no upgrades for TMCC. It will run TMCC engines just fine. You also can buy the harness and connect the Command Base to the TIU, then use the MTH remote to run both MTH and TMCC engines on your layout. G
Thank you guys. Sounds great. Are the sound and feature functions different/improved in the newer TMCC engines? I assume Legacy is a major step up from TMCC.

The Legacy does run many TMCC locomotives better than the old CAB-1, but you can pretty much do anything prior to Legacy with the CAB-1. The big difference is the Legacy runs them in true TMCC mode, the old CAB-1/Command Base only has relative step mode.
Since it was free, I think I'd just use it.
