Pier 43 is located in San Francisco, in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf.  In 1889 the State Ports Commission built the California State Belt Railroad.  It ran along San Francisco's waterfront until the 1980's.  Up until 1913, most rail cars coming from outside San Francisco to the Belt Railroad would be transported by rail car ferry to Pier 43.  The Belt Line would pick them up there.  Pier 43 was dual-gauged for both broad and narrow.  Now, all that remains is the part of the pier with the hoist housing.  It was renovated in the early 2000's and is now a historical landmark.  In the background of two of my photos is the World War II Liberty Ship, Jeremiah O'Brien.
