Hi everyone.

My wife and I along with some freinds will be going to Train Stock 4 in mid January and need some advise as to some good places to stay near Times Square (say $125-150 per night). We have not been to NYC in 30 years or more so this should be a treat for all of us.

I might add that we are taking a train from Buffalo on friday and returning on Monday. So any transportation while visiting will be by Subway and taxi

thanks.

The Hotel Pennsylvania on 7th ave is right outside Times Square. It's right across the street from Penn Station. When I travel on business to NYC from Boston I usually take the Acela and stay here. Some of the rooms and decor is a little rough around the edges but they are clean and is in the price range you are looking for. Most other places in Times Square area and mid town Manhattan are much more expensive.

Thanks for the link. (No, it didn't occur to me to look for a previous one to get info on a future one. Silly me.)

What threw me off was the request for hotel advice in Times Square. That led me to believe that it was a Manhattan event. Now that I see that it is Out West, I guess I won't be going. I am fluent in Lawn Guyland and New Yawk, but my command of Joisey is limited.
I was on the GWB once. It was a mistake. I was trying to get to Yankee Stadium, and made a wrong turn. They had very nice policemen there who were so polite and helpful, especially when I tried to make a U turn in the middle of the bridge. I knew I was in a different part of the USA when they used words I had never heard before. I got to see a wonderful place called "Fort Lee". It was quite an adventure.

Thank you all for the info. A few more questions:

Can I take pictures? Can I use a stroller? Do I tip the men's room attendant? Will there be scrapple?

Seriously, is it a one-day affair? What time does it start? Should I bring some chow?

Yes. Yes. No. No. Yes. 10AM. No, just an appetite! Big Grin

Hopefully we'll see you there.

When we went up to NYC a couple of weeks ago, we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, on 35th street. This hotel is less than a block from the Macy's Herald Square and the Empire State Building.

The hotel is almost new and the rooms are nice and comfortable.

Another nice thing is that it is located a block and a half from Penn Station. There is also a subway stop (Times Square is one subway stop away) located very close to the hotel.

Prices start at about $145 a night.

January is a relatively cheap time to find a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The out-of-town Christmas shoppers and tourists who came to see the holiday lights have gone home.

I've had good luck over the years using Priceline and Hotwire for Midtown hotels. This December I got the Sheraton Four Points at 25th St and 7th Ave (a great location, near Penn Station) for $89 by bidding on Priceline for a 3-star hotel in Chelsea.

Entering Jan 13-15 on Hotwire for NYC produces the following results:
4-star in Chelsea/Madison Sq Garden area for $126
4-star in Empire State Building area for $129
3.5-star in Midtown East for $100
4-star in Central Park area for $145
3.5-star in Times Square area for $158 including breakfast

Results for Jan 13-16 are similar.

With both Priceline and Hotwire, you don't learn the hotel name until you've paid, and there are no refunds... but I've never been unhappy with the hotels I've "won". With Priceline, you decide how much to bid; with Hotwire, they state a price and you can take it or leave it. Hotwire is typically a few dollars more, but you can sometimes make an educated guess at the hotel name (see BetterBidding for how).
