I am moving forward on the layout and I counted 32 turnouts last night. These are on a 16x17 layout. Out of pure lazy curiosity, I was wondering how that compares? If you have a chance, please reply to this post with the number of turnouts on your empire and the size of said empire.

Thanks.

Don

Well, mine is basically 24 x 12, and right now I have 22 turnouts (unless you count double-slip switches as two), then I have 24.  I'm adding two more on one end for some industry sidings, and I'll be adding two 4-way switches for an 8-track yard that will be an expansion.  I'll end up with 32 switch machines for all the switches.

too darn many.  I just got rid of my reverse loop (2 switches) and now I just loop on one end.  I still have a reverse loop on the other side.  I use manual fastrack switches which was a mistake.  I still think I'll have a heck of a time running 2 trains at once because the train will come back on the same switch it went into the loop with.  I need to replace my fastrack switches with remote switches.  I heard K-line's don't buzz when a train goes over them (I had a lionesl one and it drove me nuts).  Anybody know what K-line switch i'm looking for?

I have 5121, 5122's on my layout and I hate the buzzing. The K-line switches are nice but hard to come across these days.

10'x12' around the wall x 2.  Two independent levels.  Total Atlas switches = 16.

Five of the Atlas switches (on the bottom level) are controlled via Caboose Industries manual switch machines since they are close to the front of the layout.  I wanted more "action/involvement" in the running of the trains. The other Atlas switches are controlled via DZ-2500 machines.

Mine is 24 x 18 and has a total of 15 switches...with 8 of those being reachable and are operated manually. 🚂😉😺

Paul, i like your track plan with the town as a view block and plenty of room for scenery. Is the red line an elevated trolley line? Is this built yet, under construction or still a track plan only?

But I am only counting 12 switches. Did the track plan get modified?

Agreed, that is a nice plan.

Will, although some of them might be difficult to see clearly, I did count 15 switches.

Will, yes there are 15...the 3 you may have missed might be behind the downtown buildings and under the elevated trolley track?

The layout is built and operational...including a few photos here.

Never did a track plan but the layout is hung from 219 linear feet of  walls with 8 peninsulas of various sizes using ???? feet of track with 5 turntables,  3 levels of 2 rail and 2 levels of 3 rail with approximately 112+? turnouts.   Most turnouts are hand thrown, Some Tortoise, several sprung, some free floating which are aligned by through traffic.

The layout carefully follows the exact prototypical representation of a large elongated multifaceted linear hairball.

My planning consisted of stretching out my arm, sticking up my thumb and eyeballing what might give rise to purpose and fitment.  It's been fun, but the wife is concerned about the end game.
