Did Lionel change the molds for the modern 2 bay version of the post war and MPC hopper? A friend came over to pick up a scrap metal load, and his son had a 2 bay hopper that he wanted a load for. I picked what I thought was the appropriate size, but it didn't fit. The hopper is now smaller then the MPC counterpart, which is slightly smaller then the postwar hopper. Fortunately, I was able to re-size the load on my belt/disc sander.

Here are some pics of the PW and MPC versions. No difference externally, except for the plastic truck frames. Inside dimensions of the MPC are slightly smaller. Note the absence of the corner braces in the MPC model, and the rib on the slope sheet is more defined with a rivet detail.

Those cars that Don (Rail) has pictured both look like Postwar to me. One has metal trucks, mounted with a sheet metal plate held in place with two screws each. The other has plastic trucks, riveted directly to a boss that was added to the body casting.
There are other  Postwar variations on how the trucks were mounted.

CW, that may very well be the case of both hoppers being post war. I just assumed they were MPC because of the slight design change and plastic truck frames. The MPC models are identical to the black hopper, including inside hopper detail and dimensions. However, something changed with the modern version, as the coal loads I have don't fit. They are just a bit too wide and long.

Thanks for the input,

Don

The post war model had triangular corner reinforcements, but the MPC and newer models don't.

Where are these triangular corner reinforcements that have been mentioned several times? Are they shown in the picture of the red hopper below (circled)? If so, please see the picture of the black Postwar hopper which is also below. Those corner reinforcements were removed by Lionel during the Postwar period.
The red hopper is a 6456. The black hopper is a 6076.

The pictures are Don's (Rail).

Hello rail...

i bought one of those blue hopper and bought a fake coal lionel coal load for it but

it had to be sanded down a bit on the sides and ends to fit well too. The number is

26424. I added die cast trucks which gave it a good weight and good tracking too.

The build date is 2013 and came with the boy scout set. It is in darker blue color.

it is a nice low grade hopper for what it is and i had the 2383 set that came with the

yellow hopper 6076 or 6176 like the blue one but this blue one is made with better plastics ABS, metal brake wheel. After adding the die cast trucks and fake coal load

this made it a good car like the early postwar hoppers. See the pictures guys.

Yes, those are the corners I was referring to. That hopper is just slightly larger then the black one, and the new cars are slightly smaller then the black one.

Getting back to my original question: were the molds changed or altered, or is the size difference due to the type of material being used now?
