I am rebuilding a postwar Lionel 44/45 missile launcher mechanism, and need to replace the rubber-like pad that is inside the mechanism. It acts to cushion the end of travel for the individual launchers.
The original piece is falling apart.

What do other folks use for a cushioning material?

While I am asking, there is also a foam piece that is attached to the chassis underneath the launch mechanism to help push the latches into place. In the past I have used thin foam weather stripping of a similar size. What do folks use to replace this?

You might try using the keypad from an old TV or VCR remote control.  Usually the inside keypad is a sheet of silicon rubber with some flat areas as well as the raised keys.  The fewer the keys the more flat material is available.  Also computer stores usually sell adhesive rubber feet for mounting motherboards, etc.  These come in sheets and peel off as needed.  The area between the feet is a flat area which also has the adhesive on one side.

In keeping with the idea of using computer stuff, I ended up purchasing a rubber backed mouse pad that has some give. I cut off a couple of 1/4 inch wide strips, and worked a double thickness into the slots inside the launch mechanism where the old padding went. Seems to have enough cushioning for the job.

I have not replaced the foam pad on the frame yet.
