As Rob indicated, the reason for single pickups was of course Cost. This has been a large factor in the manufacture of Lionel trains since the beginning. Lionel trains have always been relatively expensive, and J.L. Cohen was famous for saving every penny possible. Also, he was frugal by nature, apparently. All lighted units, cabooses, whatever, had a single pickups since those Postwar days, except more upper line stuff like aluminum passenger cars. Now, as Rob notes, all Lionel pieces have had dual pickups since moving production overseas.
