MPC/LTI/LLC - how many were made, and has anyone added a second roller p/u, a/o led lighting? Mine is from the 6-11744 NYC Pass/Frt SSS, and the flickering light (one roller p/u) bleeding through the roof and walls is really distracting.

Well You could ask Dale H to draw up a circuit with a capacitor for the flickering light issue if there is only one roller pick-up.

For the light bleed on the roof, take apart the car and add tinfoil to the underside of the roof. This will deflect heat from the bulb
Reflect the light to make the car brighter.
and have the roof dark

Just how does one add tinfoil? I thought of this, but was unable to come up with a suitable means of securing it in place.

Also think it'd be easier to add another p/u to the other truck.

I use foil tape made for sealing duct work. (Nobody should really uses duct tape on their ducts.) It is a heavy gauge foil having an integrated adhesive which can be cut to shape with scissors and test fit before removing the backer. It's far easier than trying to use a glue and aluminum foil.

You should be able to find it at any of the home centers.

This is also another option. Just an FYI, Lionel does use this type of foil tape inside their Strasburg RR passenger sets too! Wink
No Mark, this is not the only modern Operating Poultry car. Lionel reissued this twice in the postwar celebration series. One as a separate sale item, and the other in the Hudson Super O freight set. I also have the red poultry stock car from the PWC Virginian Set, and the MPC version which is an exact copy of the postwar operating poultry dispatch. Those are the "chicken" versions of the car. I know they made a pork dispatch car and something else.
Fred & Greg - that adhesive backed foil tape really is an elegant, easy solution. My thanks to all who replied. I will get in touch w/ The Train Tender about adding another pick-up to cure the incessant flickering. How can Lionel sell stuff that functions so poorly?

Another question - I was considering buying a few more of these for a little unit train. Do they all have the flickering and light bleed through problem(s)?

They don't anymore, generally. The move to communist China manufacturing resulted in the financial ability to add another pickup to each car, even in starter sets. The Polar Express cars all have two pickups(if the lights flicker, a wire is broken), and even the Pennsylvania Flyer N5C caboose has 2 rollers, never done in any postwar/MPC/LTI starter set.

As Rob indicated, the reason for single pickups was of course Cost. This has been a large factor in the manufacture of Lionel trains since the beginning. Lionel trains have always been relatively expensive, and J.L. Cohen was famous for saving every penny possible. Also, he was frugal by nature, apparently. All lighted units, cabooses, whatever, had a single pickups since those Postwar days, except more upper line stuff like aluminum passenger cars. Now, as Rob notes, all Lionel pieces have had dual pickups since moving production overseas.
