Power for your layout and tools

Many of us built our layouts in finished rooms in our homes which were wired when they were built.  My round-the-room layout is in the living/dining room of my 70s ranch.  I run extensions cords from underneath the layout between all the boxes whenever I want to run or need to plug in tools or soldering iron.

When my electric screwdriver needed recharging a couple of days ago it made me wonder about about mounting an electric outlet in the fascia several places along the layout.  These would be plugged into the existing wall outlets.  It would preserve the finished look to the layout.

What do you think?  What do you do?

 I live in a 100 year old farmhouse where outlets are few and far between. My wife finally let me convert the old living room into a train room. 

I got tired of extension cords.

I ran a 12/2 romex with ground around the face of my layout with duplex outlets about every 6 feet. The outlets are mounted on the bottom of the table with the sockets facing the floor so when I plug something into them the wires don't stick out in the aisle. I wired them all in series and put a 15 amp wall switch at one end.   The switch is wired to a heavy 3 prong plug that plugs into a wall socket.

My wiring is heavy enough to run tools from any outlet,  and when I leave the room I flip the switch and the trains and lights and anything else connected to the line is turned off.
