I've mentioned before the 1680 with tender that I got as part of a prewar Lionel collection.  What to do with it is an interesting problem.  I'll start with a few photos of the engine and tender.  Then I've got a few questions about motor repair - hope someone reading this is familiar with the AF motors around 1937.

I can see that the engine and tender were repainted.  You can tell by the small bits of paint that overlap the decal edges.  The front end must have been damaged.  This engine has wood cylinders, bent wire crosshead guides and a sheet metal pilot.  I'll give those home-built parts to anyone who will pay the postage rather than trash them.

In regard to the motor - see following photos.  At first test the motor actually turned so it appears that the armature and filed wiring is OK.  But, in disassembling it some connections came loose and I can't figure old the field connections.  Can someone tell me by looking at the photo which is the field wire ?  It looks to me as if all of the reverse mechanism parts are there. Is it worth  trying to repair, or is it better to just hard wire the field and brushes so it will always run forward ?

MLAUGHLINNYC,

OK, finally got to the AF 1937 Hudson I have a took pics of the E unit wiring.  The outer points of the E unit connect to the field brushes, the center point goes to hot.  Hope the pics help out.  Had to reinsulate the hot connection after pics taken, but it shows nicely as the center wire.  Also, for the pics posted yesterday, the "file" photo of the original condition AF Hudson is credited to Greg Turinetti of the Northwoods Flyer Collection.

Referring to the pics you posted of the different wires:

B1 and B2 attach to the side points of the E unit; refer to pics I posted in previous above

"E" wire is hot to center point of E unit

"D" short wire is hot to engine headlight

"A" wire is hot to ash pan glow bulb

On my AF Hudson, with the wires to the headlight and ash pan glow, I had wire nuts to connect/hold the wires as they have to separate from the lights when removing the motor/wheel assembly.  Looking into my parts box and try locate couple sets of m/fm plugs to assist with making this better in future.  Something you may want to consider, also.

Hope this answers your questions, glad to assist you as I may.

These really are awesome engines for their times.

I have my late fathers ,which was in a bout a 85% stage of restoration when he passed. It had the tinplate whistling tender, with the fourth rail pickup.

I since have picked one up that's really a total  restoration project, but with the diecast tender.

I don't think by the looks of it that it had been ran for decades but actually tried to move. So their tough as heck little engines that once you have it wired and painted should give you many years of enjoyment !
