I'm just curious how members feel about the new steamer PS-3 engine sounds. They are definitely different from the PS-2 engines and it is very noticeable when running them together. Did someone record an engine with leaky valves? I'm not complaining or unhappy at all, just curious.

I just started buying MTH engines so I only have PS 3.0 and nothing to compare too, but I'm disappointed in the MTH sounds compared to Legacy Railsounds.  I think Lionel has the advantage in this area.  I have 2 engines (Blue Goose and GE Evolution) and don't think the sounds are good at all).  Guess I'm spoiled by Legacy Railsounds. The GE engine sounds are just like a bunch of noise.

Yes, MTH has a number of steam locomotive sound packages with "bad valve packing" (that is the technical term for what most people call valve rings). They have a "squeak" every fourth chuff, and as I recall they have some other interesting "bad valve" sounds, which subsequently effect the exhaust chuff sound.

I have a PRR H10b 2-8-0 with that "squeaking" exhaust sound, and just love it. I get lots of comments whenever I have PRR locomotives out on the layout, and that H10b is switching in the yard.
