Not the way it currently is made. Your charger is set up for two situations, a PS2 5V board and also a 3V board. The 5V has a pin connection, 3V a square one. If you get a battery connector cap which takes a 9V battery, you can splice its leads into the 5V board connection and then just connect any rechargeable 9V to it and it is good to go. But, you will have to remove battery from engine first.

If you have the older PS-1 engine, changing the battery should be step number one.

I bought an older PS-1 steam engine and changed the battery because the engine was around 9 years old. The guy at my local hobby shop could not find the date code on the original MTH battery because it was still the factory battery.

I bought the new MTH 9 volt rechargeable battery at my hobby shop and used a Radio Shack 9 volt charger with it for about 30 hours.

At that time I didn't know that you could use a BCR in the engine.
