Hi Guys, where's the first place to look when there's a fault in a PS 1 charging circuit? The pair of boards produce sound, lights, but as soon as the direction button is energized, it reboots.
Best,
Joe

Battery harness
Yeh, that was the second thing I changed after changing the battery............ But thanks for the thought!

Are you sure it's even the charging circuit? How long have you let it sit to charge the battery? Also, have you measured the battery voltage to make sure it's holding a charge? I have had bad new batteries. And be sure to not apply more than 10 volts to the track before pushing the direction button or else you can get this problem.
Am I sure? I'm never sure about anything [wink!], but yes, I took a working board pair, with a fully charged battery, and all was fine, THEN I mated the sound board from the pair that wouldn't respond to directions, and visa-versa with the relay boards. This was about a week ago, as my findings now, a week later, I know with one board from the working pair did NOT respond when mated with one from the problem pair. Now, I realize it's foolish of me not to remember which was bad, and I will need to retrace my test, BUT, point being.........it's not the battery, or connector harness.

If it's one of the boards, then best to contact someone like GGG that repairs these and get help fixing it or sending it off to him. I've got a growing pile of PS-1 boards with one issue or another that will be going to him in the future. And I do think these older locomotives are totally worth the work to get them running. I love all of mine.
I couldn't agree with you more, on all fronts of your reply! GGG has come to my rescue SEVERAL times, and I'm sure he's one of the Forum contributors with a viable answer. As for him fixing for me.............that's no fun [smile!!!]
Thanks......ENJOY!!! I am!!!

Check the 24 ohm resistor near the plug, then look for burned traces. G
Thanks G!!! You're the BEST!!!

Pinballjoe,
After repairing your engine, forget the charging unit and the battery for P1 engines. Replace the battery with a BCR before you damage your P1 engine beyond repair.

Thanks Dave!!!

Marty, yes, I am using the green battery. I haven't really addressed any of the solutions given to me since my post. However, I had some time yesterday to poke around the problem. I did verify my 24 ohm res.. One of the first things I did was meter the battery cable, and even tried another known good one in its' place. I did find a difference when metering one of the transistors, to a working board. Hopefully in the next day or so, I'll persue that as a potential fault?
Many thanks,
Joe
Stay with it Joe, you will hit it.
