My MTH Santa Fe 2900 Class Northern seems to be suffering from mad bell disease.  When placed on the track and current applied through Lionel 180W power brick(s) through Legacy and a TPC 400, the bell starts ringing after the generator startup sounds.  The whistle will not blow and you cannot trigger any of the features like station sounds through the Legacy remote.  The bell sometimes stops when the engine is put in motion and the whistle can sometimes be triggered.

This all happened after lubricating the engine and removing and installing the tender and engine shells.

I hooked up a test track powered by a Z-4000.  I placed the engine on the track, no bell.  I did a reset and then placed it back on the track powered by the Lionel equipment and the bell started ringing again.

Seems like MTH mad bell disease because it works fine with the Z-4000.

Has anyone had this type of experience?

I did John.  I used the Z-4000 and got the two whistle toots as confirmation.

I haven't yet, but I'm going down now to try another PS2 engine and get the same result.

OK, so I went down and tried an MTH diesel and didn't have the bell problem.

Next, I tried a different PS2 tender and got the bell.

The problem must be in the locomotive.  Perhaps I pinched a wire or something with I reassembled the engine.  I'm going to pull the shell and will post the results.

I pulled the locomotive shell, disconnecting the wiring that went to the smoke and marker lights.  I placed the chassis back on the track, connected the tender, everything was fine.

I connected the smoke wiring to the chassis connector leaving the shell off everything fine.

I touched the shell to the chassis everything fine.

I placed the shell on the chassis, no screws, the bell started up again.

It is weird that there wasn't a problem with the MTH Z-4000 but there was with the Lionel Brick-Legacy-TPC400.  Crisis over so whatever the problem, its gone now.

I think it was the firebox light, but you never know.  I secured that wiring, the old sticky wiring holders were loose, but I could have moved something else.
