Hi guys.

I've been considering getting into O. Either 2-rail scale or 3 rail O, I'm still weighing all options.

I currently have a decent sized S scale layout. I model modern era. My layout runs mostly lionel legacy units and other older units with TMCC installed, but I have to be careful which engines I lash-up to make them work correctly. I can only lash them running the same direction in my experience in S also which sucks.

Here's my question.  In O 3 rail, does having the 3rd rail allow you have engines facing opposite directions like a typical modern lash up would look like and function correctly? I've noticed a couple O layouts where this is done, but I wasn't sure if they were dummy units or if O 3 rail had that option using whatever engines you basically wanted and which ever direction facing, as long as they operate on whatever system you have (Legacy, MTH dcs, etc..).

Thanks guys!

All units are powered, There is programming for the Front, Middle and Rear units.  Once programmed the Consist works as one, all couplers except for the front and rear are dis-abled. Only the front and rear headlights operate.  Older TMCC control. Legacy is similar, newer, maybe a bit easier.   Mouse over the image, click on the triangle to access a video.

You can even lash-up conventional locomotives, as long as you set the E-Unit on each of them to run in the direction you want them to.  So if you have a AA lash-up of two powered F3s, let's say, one needs to be set to run forward while the other needs to be set to run in reverse.

The only issue might be if the locomotives run at greatly different speeds from one another.
