I am finally getting to the benchwork on my layout and I have a question on preferred sound deadening material.  I will have 1/2" plywood over open grid design, then sound deadening material over that.  I have read the pros and cons of Homasote and pink insulation sheets and have decided not to go with either, even though Homasote available in my area.  I have seen Quietboard in a local lumber yard, and Blue Ridge Fiberboard Sound Stop at Home Depot.  I will use one of these.  Are these essentially the same?  Preference of one over the other?

Thanks,

Michael

I have the HD Quietbrace or board, whatever HD calls it on mine, but only because it was close and cheap (As in I was too lazy to drive an hour away to order Homasote when the HD stuff was cheap enough to get all I needed for the price of one sheet of Homasote and HD was 5 min away.).  It's as messy as I hear Homasote is, but not as dense.  It helps with sound, but not as well.  I'd of gotten Homasote if I do it over again.

Michael,

Pink (or any color) insulation boards are not sound deadening. Home Depot used to carry a product called QuietBrace, which was an excellent sound deadening product and as far as my experience, as good as Homasote but at 1/3 the price. What HD carries now (at least where I live) is nothing like the QuietBrace.

If I were you, I would get Homasote.

By the way, whether cutting QuietBrace of Homasote, either can be MESS FREE if you use a knife. I always used a utility knife to cut Homasote, as for my previous five HO layouts many years ago. For cutting QuietBrace for my previous and my current O-Gauge layouts, I used a utility knife and a knife edge jigsaw blade for curves and angles. No mess and easy cutting.

This is the page of my thread that shows what I did.

Good luck!

Alex

Thanks to Sinclair and Alex for advice.  I actually purchased the HD product.  Saved a bunch of money with 4 boards.  I realize this will be a messy project, so I will use caution.  Great idea re: special jig saw blade. The HD shop I went to did not carry it, so I may try a larger one. I know I can get it on Amazon.

Another question: Do you recommend painting the boards before applying?  I purchased a gallon of earth tone "oops" paint for $9 and may use it.

Thanks again,

Michael
