I'm fairly new to trains but I've enjoyed reading some of the stories I've found on the web and I'm looking for more.  I've also got a wife who's pestering me for gift ideas and an Amazon cart looking for one more item to hit the free shipping level

Anyway, here are the criteria:

1.  Must be currently available from Amazon

2.  Ideally $30 or less unless it's amazing

3.  Nice pics are a plus

4.  We're doing a layout starting with the MTH Norfolk Southern diesel set, so for now I'd like to restrict this to only railroads that have been absorbed into the Norfolk Southern.  This still leaves a lot of good ones for you to choose from though!

So what are some of the best must-have books out there that I should be looking at?

THE LONG TRAINS ROLL, by Stephen W. Meader - a novel about sab on Horse Shoe Curve during World War II. Written for high school students. A Gripping story full of accurate railroad details

Back issues of RAILROAD Magazine from the 1940's and 1950's. GREAT railroad fiction by Haywire Mac and others.

Morning Sun books about the N&W, Southern, Virginian and Wabash

Let's see. The book has to be available on Amazon, under $30, have nice pictures and pertain to Norfolk Southern. This should meet your criteria:

http://www.amazon.com/Norfolk-Southern-Railway-Railroad-History/dp/0760332495/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1355343117&sr=1-1&keywords=norfolk+southern

Since you're spending under $30 for that one, you can probably afford a few additional bucks over 30 to get this one on NS predecessor road Southern Railway:

http://www.amazon.com/Southern-Railway-Railroad-Color-History/dp/0760325456/ref=sr_1_11?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1355343319&sr=1-11&keywords=norfolk+southern

I own both books. I believe they'll suit your purposes.

The book by the late Stephen Ambrose, on the building of the transcontinental RR, "Nothing Like It In The World," is really excellent. It's hard for us to imagine the complexity of the building of the Central Pacific east from Sacramento - when supplies: rails, spikes, the trains themselves - had to be ordered from the east, then it took months to be shipped around South America, or: unloaded on the Atlantic side of Panama (pre-canal days by approx. 50 yrs!), transported overland, reloaded on the Pacific side & eventually delivered to San Francisco!
Morning Sun Books are an interesting resource for any railfan; their quality is outstanding! And: don't forget publications such as "Trains" & "Railpace" magazines for current rail news.

Or call 717-896-3173 and buy the books directly from Paul and ask him to sign the book for you. He is a genuinely nice guy and you will enjoy the conversation. I am happy to have him among my closest friends.

Two of my favorites from childhood were written by Bill Peet - The Caboose Who Got Loose, and Smokey.  Both are good stories, and are beautifully illustrated.
